Default 87 XJS - rear window removal issue?

Stopped by the local body/paint shop today to get an estimate for new paint.

It's showing some rust at the lower right hand corner of the rear windshield, right below the chrome trim (among other places :-).

When I was talking to him about this, he recommended not taking the rear window out to get to the rust as there was a good chance of it (the rear window) breaking during dis-assembly.

The guy seemed fairly knowledgeable about his craft, and mentioned that he had an XJ-S at one time.

I need to consult Palm's book, but was wondering if anyone else is aware that this might be a problem issue.

Thanks,

John

I have never had a problem getting rear glass out or back in. Any glass can break but no reason that one is any more likely to bust than any other.
I am certain you will not fix the rust properly without removing glass though.

I had to repair rust in mine in the LH bottom corner of the rear window. If its anything like mine I would advise removing the window.

To get it out cut the window rubber and install a new one. If you have rust here ist a good chance the rubber is letting water under it.

When you re-install the window make sure you use Polyurethane sealant it will glue the rubber to the body so no water can get in. Mine was done a few years ago now and the rubber is still sealed tight to the body.

A word of caution when buying a new rubber I went through 3 different sellers before I got one that fit correctly, make sure get a money back guarantee on the rubber and test fit it before you seal it up.

The window is easy to in with soap and plastic window tools.
