And that answers my basic question. Internally the amp has separate power amp to each of the subs so they are looking for the factory standard 2 ohm woofers.

An additional question that your post raised. You stated that the Toshiba TA8233BH Output IC's were capable of 30 watts per channel rated at 2-4 ohms. Does that mean they are not over-worked pushing a 4 ohm speaker?

They should be just fine driving a 4 ohm load according to their spec sheet. They are not apparently rated for 8 ohm and that might be because their power output drops off to much by 8 ohms. I also guess they figured 30 watts wasn't enough to drive 2 woofers so they gave each one its own amp channel. I started tracing the active crossover circuit and it appears the crossover for the woofers is mono so the input to both the woofer channels are likely tied together. As they are using 4 identical output chips to get 8 channels I wonder why they didn't just go with a higher output chip for the subwoofers? Probably cheaper this way.
