Unhappy Car starting issues?

I need emergency help. . In May my car had the battery light flash on the dash for like 3 seconds and never reappeared. I didnt drive the car for a week and when I decided to drive it again it took me 3-5 times turning the key to get it to start when I let air into the battery compartment. This happened to me about 3-4 more time over the course of the month it would only start back up when I went to the rear and let air into battery compartment. So heres where it decided not to start after multiple attempts. I was driving my car all day yesterday and the last time it started it struggled to start I believed it was the battery though it took me 5-7 times to get it to start after waiting 5 mins. I had one more place I stopped and when I returned back to my car it just wouldnt start. So someone gave me a battery charger and I could hear the clicking with the key but it wasnt turning over to start. Then I had someone try to jump the battery and it still wouldnt start. Lastly AAA came out and use there battery charger and it still wouldnt start. The person who tried to jump it suggested that the alternator needs to be replaced. The AAA people suggested the starter needed to be replaced and not the alternator. I believe the battery needs to be replaced. So as for now Im not for sure but whatever it is I hope I can get it started inexpensively. Anyway to figure out whats going on ? How much would it cost to replace an alternator or starter in an 04 XKR ? Please give me some advice and help save my cat. Thanks

The advice in this thread still stands:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...g-radio-55749/

If you can get the car started take it to an auto parts store and have the electrical system tested. If you cannot get the car started ake the battery to an auto parts store and have it tested/charged.

Clean your battery terminals first before jumping into alternator/starter.
Two weeks ago I had a complete loss of power after entering the car (window dropped) and turning the ignition key. Opened the truck with the key and tested the battery ( I have a Midtronics 110 tester), tested good 690 CCA - 12.4 volts. Cleaned the terminals restoring power, recheck of battery still 690 CCA but voltage down to 12.24 due to load from electronics.
Ran the car for a few days and had the same problem, battery still tested good. I did a better job of cleaning the terminals and haven't had a problem again in over a week.

So clean your battery terminals and get your battery tested.

Another thing to check is the connection at the starter, disconnect battery first, remove cable at the starter and clean the terminal, reattach and tigthen.

Good luck
Bob

Where is the starter located ? If this needs to be replace is it an easy install like DIY or would I need to take it to a shop ? Im going to disconnect battery and go get it tested first. All I do know is the battery light appeared on the dash over a month ago for 3 seconds and disappeared.

If your battery is good, and your terminals have been cleaned and your car still will not turn over, it is likely that the problem is with your starter or the heavy gauge wiring or connections that goes between the battery and starter.

The starter is accessed from under the vehicle, so you are going to need to get it towed to a shop.

Why are you re-asking what has been answered already?

Whether it is DIY depends on your experience working on cars and the tools you have. You need to work under the car, and some of the starter bolts are a little hard to get to, needing extensions and flexible couplings. No other special tools are required.

Never having had this problem with my Jag, I will say that if your battery is charged, then it is not your alternator. If, when you try to start the car if it does nothing, no sound, no clicking, no light dimming, then your problem is probably in the electrical circuit feeding the starter (solenoid?) If the starting motor tries to turn over but clicks or turns over very slow, then you may have a bad starter. Either way, if a charged battery wont start your car, then have it towed.

I get the clicking sound when I turn my key in the ignition. So it must be the starter for sure. How much do you think labor will be to install a new starter ? I just want to get my cat back to driving again. I appreciate the advice. The car has been towed off the street now gotta find a shop to put it in.

You could have several reasons for your no start. Read this post first intermittent no start - Fixed - FAQ - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum you may have a bad starter and you may not. I know that this link is for an XJ but it might give you direction. I hope it helps!

A remanufactured starter may cost from $120 to $200. As for labor, I assume you should count with another $200, more or less.

In my opinion, the chances of a Poor Connection is 95% and a bad Starter or Solenoid is 5%.

+1 on the poor connection. That's the first place I would start.

Definitely check the starter wiring first...I've read of a fried connection on these forums causing similar intermittent problems. If that is the case, I am sure your mechanic will find it before throwing a $200 part at it. Our starters are very reliable, never heard of one that actually went dead, even the older (pre-2003s) seem to be troublefree.

Agreed, check connections first.
