Jaguar’s All-Electric I-Pace First Drive Video
Enjoy a first drive of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle as well as an in-depth look at the design and technology involved.
Fully Charged is a British YouTube show about the electric vehicle industry. In this episode, Jonny Smith doesn’t only get the chance to drive the I-Pace. He also gets to see the underpinnings of the car with Jaguar’s Vehicle Line Director, Ian Hoban and talk about the exterior design with the legendary Jaguar designer, Ian Callum.
Smith’s breakdown at the beginning of how Tesla made it first to market with fully electric production vehicles is bang on the money. He points out that Tesla is a tech company first, and a car company second, but companies like Jaguar have been making vehicles for the best part of a century.
It’s certainly isn’t just build quality Tesla struggles with. The biggest problem that Tesla faces right now is that manufacturing cars is not something you simply throw money at and hope it sticks. Even if it’s the government’s money. Vehicle manufacturing is an incredibly complicated thing to do and it’s a lesson Elon Musk doesn’t seem to be learning. In 2017 he claimed Tesla would be building 20,000 Model 3 cars per month. However, only 1,875 were delivered in January 2018 and, as of writing, production is paused completely.

To us, that makes the Jaguar I-Pace all the more exciting. The market for luxury electric cars and SUVs is there. However, unlike Tesla, Jaguar doesn’t over promise and underperform. The most important takeaway from the video is that Jaguar isn’t just building an electric vehicle to get to market. Instead, Jaguar is building the best electric vehicle they can. We share Smith’s enthusiasm for Jaguars approach of building an electric car that has their DNA all the way through. It looks like applying the ideology of grace, space and pace is going to come naturally to Jaguar electric vehicles.
