Harmon Kardon head unit compatibility

Harmon Kardon head unit compatibility
In a 1997 VPD, is the head unit different for the base sound system and another for the Harmon Kardon system or the same for both? I found a replacement HU, but wasn't sure if it mattered what amp and speaker system came with the car. Thanks.
