Greetings Nick,

That was a Harmon Kardon subwoofer fitted from the factory on cars equipped with the premium sound package. On the XJ, nothing else will fit because of the lack of depth.

I have a H-Ksubwoofer speaker grille from a '97 XK8 coupe, contact me off list if you are interested. Like yours, the speaker from mine was gone when I got the car.

No, I missed the year, sorry...it was in the title! 97coupe, got it. Pretty sure an 8" can fit, as the hole is just shy of a 10" opening (200mm is what the subwoofer size is from the factory), from what i remember.

I'd suggest either direct swap out with an 8" (w/ an adapter piece), or risk altering the hole permanently and getting a car audio place to cut out the hole for a custom fit 10". I'd do the 10", but thats just me. The car audio shop will help you pick a subwoofer make/model that is 'free-air' designed to work best with this type of installation.

Here's the wiring diagram...looks like you have the standard audio system, and if I am not mistaken, you will actually have to connect those wires to the amplifier. Doesn't look like it is pre-wired. If the existing amp doesn't have enough 'punch' to satisfy you (which it may not with an aftermarket sub, look to have a small mono amplifier added in the trunk to help you out.

More tips sure to follow. good luck.

For shallow mount subwoofers, there are alot of newly designed ones out there...JL Audio is my favorite. You surely can find one that will fit in there, if it is designed like the XJ as JagTech mentioned above. I personally have never seen the shelf of a coupe.

Could have less work ahead then, and it should be pretty easy to find out too. Looks like your good to go.

Can you post the wiring diagram again? It says the document is no longer available. I've got the same situation with my coupe - wires leading nowhere for the subwoofer and same with the dashboard tweeters. I found some small no-name tweets and a dual channel sub that will fit but need to know where the wires lead (where is the amp?).

Thanks!

Burg, where's the link you're referring to. If its a dead link, I can probably get another one up.

And, what year is your car, the colors change from MY to MY. Stick your year in your sig, it'll save alot of time later on.

I actually found this site in another posting which is perfect for anyone doing a sound upgrade to an older coupe: http://p4-8057.uk2net.com/jag/

In there he's got a diagram for the pin connector beneath the armrest that shows where to hook up a crossover network.

http://p4-8057.uk2net.com/jag/ArmRes...rConnector.doc

A full wiring diagram would be helpful though.

The JTIS CD has a full electrical diagram for every system, if you want to grab it sometime.

Here are the Entertainment pages for your 1997.

One of these days I'll save all of the MY electrical documents and upload them to our FAQ section.

Default intermittant sound

New question and I don't know if this speker related or not. 97 XJ6-R has HK sound system that infrequently and spontaneously radio stopped sound output for 1-4 minutes then resumed. Past week it stopped putting out sound altogether but the radio tuner appears to work according to the LCD and the radio auto tunes normally. Yesterday during a drive the stereo spontaneously came back on but I had to turn off car to go into library and when I restarted car no more stereo. Does any one have any clues?

sounds like a short, and then the amp shuts down (perhaps) to protect itself, then resumes after a time w/o the short. Check speaker leads and other power/ground connections. Could be very hard to find something like this.
