Default Replace Alpine Navigation with Denso?

I recently acquired a 2001 XKR with factory Alpine navigation system. I've seen the other posts about finding updated DVDs and Alpine's discontinued support after 2004. Shame on Jag for selecting a supplier who dropped support after just a couple of years without offering a solution. If I had purchased this car new, I would have been very disappointed!
Has anyone tried to swap out the Alpine system with the newer Denso system? The dash controls and screen look identical in the 2004 cars, so I'm wondering if this might be a plug-in replacement idea.
Please let me know if you have tried this and how it worked!
Cheers!

Don't know for sure, but the San Francisco Jag dealer said the Denso unit will not work in the older Jags (gee, do we get an "antique" license plate because our "old" XKR's are out of date?) Jaguar of N. America are a bunch of losers - I tried to get them to continue their Jaguar Bonanza airplane, but they dropped their sponsorship in 2001, saying that they couldn't see how it would benefit them. I had a spread in an airplane magazine done in 2001, highlighting my 2000 XKR, and my 2000 Jag Bonanza, and the magazine folks were ecstatic. Too bad Jaguar of N. America is so poorly managed.

Just a thought....

While you are researching whether to try this project, have you tried to find the latest Alpine disc? This might be less out of date than your current one. Ebay is a good source for this kind of stuff.

I really doubt that the NAVTEQ/Denso disc will work in an Alpine unit.

Default Denso disk will not work in an Alpine unit

I was told by two different Jag dealers that the Denso disks or Denso units will not work in Alpine installations, and you cannot put a Denso unit into a Jag that has had an Alpine installation.

Thanks Aero Jag.... Yes, I was speaking of the compete unit swap and not just the disc... I kind of figured this would not work but I was in hopes cause of the disc not being put out by Navtec after 2004 I think... And my unit can not find anything.....

Now I have found a product (Thanks H2Oboy) that will allow you to install another unit all together like Garmin to go to the factory screen called NAVTV box... I think the head unit must be replaced to but I am sure H2O can add to this....

Thanks

I've been thinking about simply trying to remove the Alpine unit and mount a complete Garmin dash-mount touchscreen unit in it's place. I just need a Garmin with a 5.6 inch display. The new Garmins are all very thin, so space wouldn't be an issue. The old Alpine knobs/buttons would no longer do anything, and the "clock" would be gone, but the unit would be a touchscreen and the maps would be easily update-able. The closest thing to a 5.6 inch display that I can find is the Garmin Nuvi 1490T, but it's only 5.0 inches. The would mean that about 3/16ths of an inch of the Garmin "frame" would be visible where the current display is. I'm not sure if I'd like that look. Also, the 1490T doesn't have provisions for an external antenna, and I don't know if the internal antenna could pick up the satellites buried inside the dash like that. I really want to stick to Garmin because I've tried Magellan and TomTom and they both suck. Any suggestions?

if its thin Sam, it will fit. There's a member trying to sell a replacement unit similar to your plan, removing the buttons and putting a blank on one side, a USB plug on the other. I personally didn't like that appearance.

I put a Garmin GVN 53 in my car, and spliced into the RGB outputs to the screen. The little black box sits in the boot, and I use a remote to manipulate the GPS commands. I did have to add a switch, that allows the clock, JAG nav, and the Garmin NAV to all be used when I like. I put the thread in the Audio/Video section, search for me as the author and you may get some ideas.
