Unhappy Weld Through Primer in Oz

Hi Everyone,

I'm a bit frustrated here - I can't get hold of Weld Through Primer and everyone looks at me blankly when I ask for it! I've gone through the usual SuperTeen Autos, etc and Repco and even the Welding 'specialist' I bought my kit from! No-one's heard of it!

I'm guessing it's not what we use here. I read a lot of the UK Practical Classics mags and they talk about it a lot.

Basically, what am I supposed to spray on the back of metal surfaces that will be completely inaccessible once they've been welded into the car's structure? (i.e. To protect them from rust.)

Even though I'm a beginner at panel work, I do want to do it properly.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Tony.

Try using a left handed screw driver instead.

Usually you would spray a fish oil, wax or other product into the inaccessable space after weld is finished.

you need to contact a panel beater supply house like here in sydney there is SAPE PTY LTD - Leading Supplier to Automotive Paint, Consumable and Equipment - Home . The products there you will be surprised to learn are often cheaper than superteen auto and repco and much higher quailty
What are you welding up?. Im about to do the same on an x308. Im repairing a small box section jusy beneath the windscreen so i will be using the same product.
You oil the panel up or use cavity wax or expanding foam after it is primed painted properly.
best
Peter

Let us know how you get on. I am struggling to understand how the heat from the welding would not destroy the primer on the inaccessable side.

Hence the need for weld-through as it will cope with the heat.

For now I've conceded defeat - the other problem is that when I've tried to get other paint cans posted to me they are supposedly 'dangerous goods' and the price just gets amusing. Recently I wanted custom mixed "Pale Primrose" spray cans and the postage from Sydney to Canberra was going to be $A25 - per can!!

Most of the welding I'm doing is in and around the boot area.(See below)
This lip around the boot is double skinned. For now I'm just using Cold-Gal Zinc primer on the reverse sides which, though not ideal, is better than nothing.

(Don't be harsh on my welding - I'm still teaching myself!

Cheers,

Tony.

Try Septone corrosion guard or marine guard for anti rust
I have been using it for years it was the only stuff that stopped my old 450 SL rusting away here on the Gold Coast and its non toxic doesn't damage paint here's the link
Septone Products Australia supercheap sell it to has a milion and one uses
I usually clean the loose scale of then soak it a let it dry and soak it again stops rust dead and nothing gets it of not even 2500 psi water blasters only thing that will get it of is methylated spirits try it you will be surprised and lasts a long time living 1 k from the pacific ocean everything rusts rots and so forth I spray it on everything
Just be careful if you are a KIWI might bring back strange memory's (LOL)

you do not need "spray cans" per se, You can buy a normal tin can of paint and then go o bunings and purchase a $10 insect sprayer, which is a plastic bottle with a hand pump attached to it. The insect sprayer, once pumped for a minute by hand will presuurise the paint you place inside of it and then you attach a plastic tube, also from bunnings to the nozzle of the insect sprayer.. (actually best to remove the nozzle and attatch the tube to the insect sprayer and put the nozzle on the end of the tube with an o'ring clamp) this way you can spray paint in any little corner or hole.. just feed the tube into it the corners etc.
You can also thin down the paint if you desire.
Its cheaper to buy paint in a tin can then spray cans and the insect sprayer set will only set you back $10-$15.
Make sure you place seam sealer along all weld points/ lap joints, and then after that paint the area.
best
Peter

Default Lanaolin baed marine guard

Yes its the best rustproofing waterproofing wood treatment it literally has 1001 uses like I said living on the Gold coast 1K from the ocean on top of a hill facing east everything rots rusts or gets mouldy
I had tried everything known to man then about 10 years ago I was shown the lanolin based products
The grease is an awesome product as well no good for high speed bearings but amazing example when building the deck I used some very large bolt headed screws I dipped them in the lanolin grease then used a impact gun to drive them in that was 8 years ago the bolts still have no sign of rust on the outside I had to remove a couple the other day to modify a railing they unscrewed easily and again no sign of corrosion I dunked them again and screwed them back in again

On all my cars as soon a s a spot of rust or anything like that appears I just soak it with it the rust doesn't disappear it goes a really dark colour as the lanolin penetrates the metal and then forms a wax like cover
I even used it on the convertible top on my old Mercedes 450SL all the other waterproofing **** lasted till the next shower and the cans where expensive then I got this stuff put it in a bowl and brushed it on on a really hot day and left it in the sun to dry it made the canvas look like a well worn drizabone gave it character but it also stopped the water coming through the canvas did at a couple more times over the years never leaked again the water would just puddle on the fabric whereas before it would just go through it eventually
I am a believer in the product give it a try you will be amazed and a bottle goes a long way I get the squirt bottles not the aerosol cans

Should be able to get custom mixed paints in pressure pack from Allard Auto Paints in Isa Street.
