Sorting the electrics on my 83 XJ6 Sovereign
My recent purchase has a few electrical problems, I've already done the headlights.
Some idiot butchered an extra relay into the loom, to supposedly fix the headlights, I binned the add on relay and fixed the actual problem instead. I opened up the high/low beam latching relay and bent the bar of the contact points so as to close the gap in order to counteract points erosion. I've put a new high/low beam relay on the shopping list
Fixed non functioning fuel gauge. Dodgy R/L fuel tank switch, I used the map light switch after I swapped out the buttons. Added switches to the shopping list, all 4 on the panel look tired & tatty. and the wood graining of the console panel needs attention.
Fixed non working rear window demister. Dirty fuse & connections.
To do:
Repair damage to rear wiring loom, Some moron used pigtail connectors to fit a trailer plug, if they had bothered to look they'd have noticed that Jaguar in their infinate wisdom had provided a plug for that very purpose.........dumbarse tow bar fitter! And since then someone else removed the towbar and cut out the wiring without bothering to cover the bare ends of the wires.....hence the damage to the loom!
Fix the buggered indicator telltales (haven't looked at this yet, but I suspect I find someones handy work)
The Air conditioning/ heater wiring is a real mess, Some fool decided to "fix" the aircon by adding 3 rocker switches (hidden in the L/H ashtray) using an interesting variety of methods to butcher their way into the loom, of course damned pig tail connectors are a feature but there are crap crimp on terminals and my personal favourite: bare wires twisted together with some shitty insulation tape barely covering them!
The bare metal sheave of the mechanical cable for the cruise control was rubbing against the bared wires to the switch on the aircon drier.
No wonder the aircon fuse was burned clean out of the fuse box, an inline fuse had been poorly soldered to the cremated fuse clips. In fact they've added inline fuses all over the aircon/heateing system. I have found a blue vacuum hose just floating about in there not connected to anything.
Fuse box and ashtray added to the shopping list.
Find out why the electric drivers door mirror doesn't work on the up/down plane, in/out plane works fine.
That's it for the electrics, unless of course I find something else.

I forgot to mention fixed the radio cutting in and out. Tightened up the antenna nut, thereby earthing the system properly.
And of course the trip computer seems a bit random to say the least.

Rear wiring loom repaired. Solder and heat-shrink tubing are your friends!
Indicator tell tales not working due to some dipshit fitting a 3 pin flasher relay instead of the 4pin unit required! 4 pin flasher ordered.
So that leaves the aircon/heater issues, the R/H door mirror control and the trip computer as outstanding electrical problems.
Now to move on to the body and any potential under car problems to sort out.

Hi Jag83,
You may want to post these musings and questions in the Jaguar Models(Classics) > XJ6 Series I, II & III section as this area isn't a general forum area.
I navigated here by mistake and haven't been here in a couple of months.
In regards to your door mirror, if the servo is making a noise when you move the toggle, but the mirror doesn't move, the problem could be that the glass has separated from the gymble behind.
A careful positioning and then pressing of the mirror back into the cradle may be all that is required.
Cheers,
Nigel
