Default Cleaning rims

Well I have a 93 xj40 and I don't know how many people here actually have that car, but the rims have these spokes, and there must be like 40 different spokes. Just wondering how you think would be a good way to clean these.

Right now I just cover my finger with a towel and go into every hole, which takes forever, doesnt get all the way into each gap to clean, and makes for a sore hand. i'm considering using a toothbrush it's just so hard.

Heres a picture

Degreaser and presure washer. I had these rims and cleaning them was a pain in the buttocks(specially as I got closer to the lug holes) until I started degreasing them and presure washing them.

THe difficult part on mine is the spokes aren't just wire, they are like an inch thick, and it gets narrower as you go deeper into the rim. So close to my brakes there is a lot of dirt I cannot reach.

Hey there 93...............I was going to suggest buying one of those alloy wheel brush cleaners ( like a toothbrush, nut bigger)..this will help for sure.............also a good Alloy wheel cleaner followed by a high pressure washer will certainly do the trick.
Have you thought, when its time to do the brakes about upgrading to EBC Redstuff pads? These will significantly increase your stopping power AND seriously reduce the amount of brake dust too, which is your worst problem as I'm sure you know.

Well I actually used about 50 Q-tips to clean the front two wheels, took forever and didnt work well.

INside most of each spoke it is either liek rusted alloy or it is just extremely greasy, so I might go get some degreaser tomarow, I assume they sell that at Pep boys correct?

I have never heard of this brake dust, but seeing as we just put new disks on 400 miles ago and new brake pads then too, I dont think we will be getting these Redstuff pads, but how much are they?

Dont have the price offhand.........
Go to EBC brakes ltd and search for Redstuff pads, read the write up on them! Serious stopping power, reduces brake dust onto yoor rims too.......a very good upgrade.
I'll try and find the part numbers for you....got them somewhere.
Also type in scooby58 at the checkout if you buy for a 15% discount

Thanks Jimbo! A bit to pricey for me, so regular ceramics from my auto part store will have to do for me!

Are those even US legal, because I see they have all the prices in pounds, and I know some parts are allowed in Europe but not in the states.

93xj6,

Those wheels look darn hard to clean! A couple of thoughts I have: Mother's mini power ball, and the New England wheel brush. I recommend using DP Gel Wheel cleaner. However, for really dirty wheels you can't beat Poorboy's Spray and Rinse Wheel Cleaner. The Poorboy's is amazing stuff! Truly spray on and rinse off. However, I wouldn't advise using it every time as it is pretty powerful stuff.

Good luck and post some before and after pictures!

Brake dust is created from the brake pads and rotor. As you apply the brakes the pads give of a little dust from the grinding on the rotors. Go to www.autogeek.net and look up cleaning wheels. They have a great list of how to clean the wheels. Also check out www.autogeekonline.net where lots of folks post their experiences detailing cars.

Degreaser and pressure washer, will that work for me too? I've used the pressure washer by itself, but it just won't do, I still have to finger my entire rim. I'm also never able to get behind the spokes, I can only do that from the other side of the tire, but witht the brakes in the way, I'm better off removing the tire. I haven't actually removed them to clean them to date, too lazy. At the end, they look great, roughly 40 min on each rim and 3 cans of Nevr-Dull. Any suggestions?
