Default Best MPG achieved?

Hey guys, I know JC from Top Gear did this a while ago in an A8 Tdi, from London to Edinburgh and back......around 800 miles.
Here's my scenario - A6 3.0 tdi with a full tank of fuel. Left Cumbernauld early doors (4am) and headed for Theale, nr Reading and just outside London. My boot was full of gear probably equivalent to carrying a teenage passenger I guess. Mostly motorway driving on cruise at around 80mph until I got to Leeds ( major hold up due to accident meant I was sitting in traffic for an hour and a half and it affected my fuel economy big time. As I was late I booted it for a while at around 100+ and got my colleague picked up at Derby, ( 6'6" and around 240 lbs ) and on to Theale again at around 80mph.
On the way home dropped my colleague off at Derby and then onto Stoke via the A50 ( as there were still major problems on the M1 seemingly )
I filled up at Stoke with the dash showing 637 miles travelled and 90 still in the tank under the same driving conditions - a total of 727 miles
When I filled up and checked the computer told me I could expect 915 miles if I used the same driving style.

I fully believe that if I emptied the boot and drove around at 60mph on mostly motorways I could achieve in excess of around 800 miles every tank....lol
God it'd be so boring though
Through an average tank with a good mix of city stop start driving with some motorway thrown in as well as a mix of gentle cruising + some pedal to the metal stuff I can average around the 500 miles mark + or - 50 either way I'd say. Fuel is Tesco supermarket standard diesel so nothing special!

Anyways......just thought I'd share it with you
I'd be interested to hear what some of you guys with X types / S types / XJ's and XF's etc were gwetting mileage wise? Why not drop by and share your stories?

All the best

Have had my S Type diesel now for 5/6 weeks and have only done one longish trip in that time. Approx 180 miles in total via M62 and some cross country A roads showed 37.2 mpg for the trip. Doing local work 3/4 miles and 10 mile trips shows 24.6 as an average which is not great but with cold starts and no chance to get to full operating temp. I think kis probably about right for such a heavy car.

Last week I did a 742 mile round trip mainly on the motorway to collect a car bought by a relative off ebay. I zeroed the mileage etc at the start of the journey and at the end it showed we had an average of 40.7 mpg at an average of exactly 60 mph.

I did not try and drive economically, we were stuck in traffic once for about 15 minutes and we stopped twice going down and twice coming back, plus the stop at the end.

The overall average for the car, which usually does 5 mile commutes went up from 28 mpg to 32.4 mpg.

Nice one Delta - Its a shame you can't get a few more trips like that on the mptorway.....It really does do wonders for your average mpg!

Meantime I found a pic of my onboard computer display showing the 915 miles to a tank and thought I'd post

I have just returned from a 300 mile round trip - Yorkshire to Norfolk (on the dreaded A17/A47) and returned 42.5mpg at an average of 45mph.

Jim - I changed from an Audi A4 2.0TDI to the Jag and previously would average 58+ for the same journey. VW/Audi really have got the power and economy maximised in their diesel engines but I love the smoothness and power delivery in the Jag.

Such a bad car, I had one on my last trip to the UK. If that had any other badge other than a VW badge, the press would hammer it at being a pile of c@p. Slow, boring with lots of BIG design flaws. How bad do you have to go to sacrifice economy?

Clarkson did the Jaguar XJ (old style) economy run to blackpool to turn on the lights.

It says all variants so........... In my 2001 Dodge Ram with the Cummins Turbo Diesel I can average 600 miles to a tank of fuel. That's approximately 20 mpg and it's a mixture of city and highway driving. The truck is far from stock, but the components I've used to gain horsepower seem to have come with a bonus of fuel mileage as well. Average for these trucks stock is about 15mpg.

Nice bonus there crewegirl.....you usually find though that any diesel that has been modified to increase performance from Remapping, air intake etc etc can also provide improved fuel economy when driven normally.....all good

seems a lot of diesel vehicles around TEXAS, mostly small-mediumtrucks

last month a Ford Mustang fitted with a GM diesel engine averaged 36mpg,US gal. on a 1000mile round trip , to a race track after posting a world record of 205mph.

rather impressive, and made no smoke??

An English journalist achieved more than 2000 kilometers trip on his VW Jetta or Passat in one tank , I think that's also impressive

true about Jetta tdi, fuel mileage, may be the best for a production car.

but cant go 205mph, and acceleration second to non.

accels like a Porsche turbo, but porsche dont get good fuel mileage.

some future thoughts, the best of large 4dr. sedans may well be turbo diesels.

big roomy ,comfortable, quiet, and excellant mileage!

when it comes to smell, whats worse catylitic or diesel, and diesel is less cost!

Er, worst mpg now. With the very cold starts and a short commute, 24.3mpg.

I was driving today and did around a 100 mile round trip so good chance to see how the mpg was holding up.
I've done more than a few thousand miles over the last 6-9 months and ALL stop start and around town so I knew it would have dropped significantly, but down to 33.1mpg

I did get it up to 35.4mpg by the end of the run but its going to need some really decent runs to get it back up to where it should be.
This extreme cold weather and short journeys aren't helping!

i was rereading this post.

and remembered back in mid 80s owned a Cadillac diesel car,4dr sedan, and it would average 30-33mpg a US gallon. dont know what that figures in UK gallon?
car rode and drove great, quiet, smooth, all the comforts of a Luxo barge US style.

if only it was reliable, engine wise, but ALAS, it had engine problems much to often.

trade it off for Suburban wagon diesel, much better vehicle, drove it 225,000miles no probs. but did not get the mpg the Caddy did.
