1974 xke rear calipers are sticking
Well the inevitable has happened. I have revived my OTS after 20 years in storage. The rear calipers are now sticking. I assume it is the calipers. I have replaced the master cylinder. Is there any way to replace the calipers without removing the rear end? After everything else I have had to do on this car I am gaining courage on this major endeavor. They say do not be afraid to do the job, but there is a lot that can go wrong and if there is another fix i am open to that. PS I have a lift and am by myself.
Check your shop manual, there might be an access panel behind the seats to get to the calipers. Sometimes the brakes stick because of the callipers sometimes it is the flex lines expanding when they get old. If you drop the cage it usually means replacing other items "while you are there" such as U-joints, diff seals, bearings, etc., which might be a good idea to check out.
As the rubber brake hoses age sometimes the interior of the hose collapses restricting the flow. There's plenty of pressure to get fluid through when you press the brake but the return flow is not under much pressure so it holds pressure on the pads. I believe the rear brakes only have one rubber hose connecting the brake line to the rear cage so it should be an easy replacement and certainly worth a try.
Well I am waiting for the brake line. I took of the air box covering the brake line and you were right the line is leaking and in horrible shape. I couldn't see it because it was covered. I am praying this fixes by rear brake problem. It will certainly allow me to completely flush the system. Thank you for your sage advice.
