Default Auto to manual conversion 4.2

Hi
is there anyone out there who has converted a 4.2 E from auto to manual ?.
I have a complete engine , gearbox (4 speed all syncro) fitted with short overdrive unit already coupled to the engine so I have , bell housing , flywheel and all other associated parts .
I would like advice on the pedal box , is it a case of just getting a clutch pedal and spacer and fitting into my existing auto pedal box , changing or chopping the brake pedal to standard manaul also , what about clutch pivot linkage from the pedal to master cylinder , is that available as a spare?.also have others chopped an access panel above the gearbox and fitted the sng fibreglass cover or some other cover.
I've heard theres a lot of room to get around the moss box because the tunnel is bigger to accomodate the old auto box so is there any need to chop things about .
The standard xj6 gear knob with overdrive switch will be 2 inches further back , has anyone converted the xj6 remote plate so the gear knob protrudes in the right place ?.
lastly , tbe centre console , can I use my existing auto console , obviously removing the auto change paraphernalia and fitting what ?.
Any advice from people who have done all this successfully would be really appreciated to help me along the way.
I believe the fitting of master cylinder and slave cylinder shouldnt pose a problem , is that right ?.
Thanks Badey.

I got as far as you did with spare engine, transmission bell housing et. all and ten sold the XKE (S 1.5- 2+2) before completion . You did not state which model S1, S2 or S1.5 2+2 as some of detail part are different, but main ones are same. Just compare Illustrated parts catalog from Auto to Manual for your model to see what you need. All the hydraulic parts including plumbing kits are still available.
If you wind up needing any of these let me know. See picture: The right side has the brackets that fix the brake and clutch reservoirs to the heat shield and the clutch reservoir (white on white not to clear in picture). The Peddle box is correct overhauled unit from an XKE ( bolts into same hole as Auto box).
Should be fun project with enjoyable road results when finished.

hi David
sorry it's taken a while to reply .
my car is a series 2 2+2.
my original engine suffered total failure, I picked up a series 1 xj6 4.2 lump with 4 speed box and short overdrive so I have the bell housing, clutch parts, everything drivetrain wise including the overdrive gearstick.
I've stripped the engine and it's in really nice condition as is the box, so I will transplant the whole lot straight in using my original e type ancillaries and brackets etc..
Do you still have your parts , pedal box and the like ?
thanks

Yes I still have peddle box. Also forgot to mention I had to have a new drive shaft manufactured and balance. If your lucky on the final measurements, you may get away with shortening and re-balancing an XJ6 driveshaft.

Hi David ,
I think I can use my drive shaft , I believe dimensionally the manual box and short overdrive is the same length as the auto , so the standard prop bolts on , i think ?.
how much would you like for the pedal box and the other bits and bobs you have ?.
I can get a clutch pedal and adapt my brake pedal to fit into my existing pedal box but would be nice to have something to just bolt straight in.
regards
Barry

Hello Barry,
You're correct in thinking the XJ6 gearbox, with the Laycock de Normanville Type A Compact overdrive, will fit without any modification; not even to the prop shaft.

With regards to questions from your earlier Posts, the existing Automatic Transmission tunnel will give plenty of clearance for the manual gearbox. 6 cylinder E Types had a smaller tunnel for the manual Gearbox, but S3 E Types all had the same large tunnel for both the Auto and Manual Gearbox. Many incorrectly think that the Transmission Tunnel for an Auto box, consumes foot room. This is not the case, as the Transmission tunnel only exists in the centre section of the car and doesn't encroach whatsoever into the floor section where the seats are mounted and the forward area that your legs and feet occupy.

There is not much scope to altering the Top Cover of the XJ6 gearbox to put the gear lever in the same position as an authentic manual transmission gearbox. Many that carry out the Auto to Manual transmission swap using an XJ6 gearbox, leave the Top Cover and hence, the gear lever position as is, then modify the Auto Trans centre console to take the gear lever boot, etc. Denis Welsh Motorsports in the UK makes and After Market Top Cover in the same configuration as an E Type. The price for the Top Cover only is £495.00 (no selector rods etc.). The existing Selector Rods in the XJ6 gearbox are the same as for the E Type; accordingly, they can be used.

Regards,

Bill

Question XJ6C Conversion Auto to Manual

I want to convert my Xj6C from auto to Manual. I'm working with American Powertrain (theDrivenMan). My questions:
1. Where can I get an adapter plate for the Tremec T5?
2. where can I get the right input shaft for the T5?
3. Or where can I find an XJ6 manual? Are they all 4 speeds?

Hi ScanMan,
1) If you mean the adaptor plate between the T5 and the Jaguar 4.2L manual transmission bell housing --- I would think Driven Man or you may have to get their bell housing. The E-type kit comes with a new bell housing according to their site (Driven Man)
2) Again I would check with Driven Man, their E-type kit used the 9.5" 4.2 clutch plate. You may need the entire clutch kit. There has been talk on other sites that some of the 4.2L throwout bearings are failing after a short period of time - the carbon separating from the retainer. If you are talking about the input shaft pilot bearing (spigot bearing in UK) there maybe a insert bearing that gets installed. again talk to Driven Man
3a) There weren't many XJ6 imported with manual transmissions, so there hard to find in the USA. I would check with Welsh Jaguar in OH since they dis-assembly cars and sell use parts.
3b) My understanding they were 5 speeds.

The XJ6 & XJ12 series I, II, II Forum would have the knowledge of this type of swap. You may want to pose your questions there.

I hope this helps, Good Luck with your project.
