Default Brake lights - nada

Got my car back last night, new fuel pump and lines. Noticed that I don’t have brake lights. I checked the fuse which was fine, changed it anyway, didn’t solve the problem. The rear lights and reverse lights do function. Thoughts?

Pull the 2 wires off of the brake light switch and connect them together. With the ignition on the brakes light should go on, otherwise its in the wiring. The brake light switches are known to fail.

The brake light switch is located on the LH side of the of the picture frame.

Hi Smonop,
The picture frame is the structure at the front of the engine frame rails and the bonnet support frame attaches to.

As your car seems to be a series 2 you will find the switch between the brake booster and the engine. Mounted on the bulkhead it is easy to remove the old one and replace it (quickly) and you will not have to bleed the system.

Thank you guys. It was a quicker fix than that, see the pic.... for my edification would it have been disconnected with replacing the brake master cylinder (a few months ago) or potentially during fuel pump replacement (a few days ago)? I didn’t do either, but do know that connection was fine prior to having work done because because I had replaced that fuse when I first got the car and the brake lights functioned. Thanks again!

Hi Smonop,
Glade to hear that it was a simple fix.

Good work--there would be no reason to disconnect those leads when doing a master and the fuel pump is on the other end of your car.

Well they did a lot of work, I’m sure it was to make room / get the wires out of the way to install something or other (new starter, new battery connections, cooling fans, slave cylinder, etc.). No harm no foul. Thanks again guys, always appreciated! Hope my shop manuals get here soon, may not have to ask as many basic questions!

These switches just go bad after time. I have had to replace mine 2 times over the past 30 years even though I keep fresh brake fluid in my brake system changing it every 3 years.

I will keep that in mind, thank you. At least I know how to locate it now!
