is there any way to lubricate the bearings in these motors or must they simply be replaced when they start to squeal.

I have done this with liquid graphite, but only on the shaft behind the fan...
Hold the motor with fan up, and squeeze the liquid graphite onto the shaft....
If you can run the motor in the upright position (on the bench), for a few seconds (I would hold it in a vise), that will help get the graphite into the bearing. Do not use more than a few drops. Best to take the fan off.
The rear bearing would probably require disassembly of the fan case...Not sure how difficult that would be, as I have not done that.

Quite easy to dismantle the fan case. Needs to be on a bench. Take care removing the plastic fan as they can sometimes be tight and they may be fragile with age. Once the long screws are removed the case and centre shaft can be separated giving access to the rear of the shaft for lubrication. Don't over lubricate. When dismantling, note how they fit together to aid reassembly and positioning of the brushes.

 

many thanks. cleaning up the motor was nothing compared to getting the thing out and in! sore back! the last person to install the motor did so with hole for the wiring facing up 12 noon position and water had leaked into the motor can. there was considerable rust in the can a the back motor bearing shaft was slightly corroded. removed the rust and dressed the shaft with 1200 grit paper. based on your recommendation I actually used a paste made of dry graphite and triflow (a light oil/Teflon lub I have used on racing bicycles for years. everything is working perfectly
