Default Replacing a '74 v12 convertible top

After 40 years it is time to replace the convertible top on our 74 xke. The structural components are fine, but the vinyl top itself is worn out. There are replacement tops online, both vinyl and cloth and I am not sure which one to use. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which might be better, or a reliable place to get it from? Is it difficult to replace?

Difficult if you have never done it before. If doing yourself, research different tops and buy the best. My brother-in-law lived in Niceville, is in FWB now, had a Mustang convertible and all shops in area wanted $1200 to do top. He drove it to where I live, near St. Louis and had a glass rear window top installed in show condition for $500. You might want to check trim shops in Ala. and see if they are cheaper, would save you a headache. If you had cloth and are preserving Jag resume with cloth. Do not forget liners and pads.

The normal materials divide up into three categories:

1. Vinyl - I think this may be the stuff Jaguar used originally. It lasts a long time, the one on my MG Midget is the 1977 original.
2. Double-duck - 2-layer cloth canvas with a rubber inter-layer. Can fade if kept in sunlight
3. Mohair - same principle as double duck but better material, and doesn't fade so badly. German stuff the best

Anyway, have a read: -

Thanks for the help! It will be nice to take it out without fear of getting caught in a thunderstorm.
