Good morning everyone, I recently acquired a 1970 E Type Series ll 2+2. Neither the speedometer nor the tachometer work. It appears a previous owner made some changes to the car and never did whatever might be necessary to make everything work.
The automatic transmission was removed and a Getrag 5 speed manual was installed. The casting numbers on the side are: 262.0.0510.90 and: 225 1.3 Does this indicate a Getrag 265? The hole for a speedometer gear appears to be blocked off and upon removal the housing is empty. I assume it had an electric speedometer pick up that is now gone. Does that seem right? I have heard of mechanical speedometer gears and drives that can apparently be fitted but there doesn’t appear to be direct access to the output shaft. Can anyone educated me please? Alternatively, I have read that one can use the original electronic output from the transmission and install a “cable-x” speedometer signal converter for use with a mechanical speedometer such as the E type’s. Is that a viable way to go? I will attempt to attach photos.
Secondly, the car has an MSD 6A ignition control box and an MSD coil, how is the tach supposed to be connected? Positive side of the coil? Photos also attached I hope.
Any help or insight would be wonderful, thanks Colin
Look at MSD web site for 8920 Tach adapter, and the wiring for your tach.
Your tach may have been originally connected to the + or the - terminal of the ignition coil ( others will know which years were - and which years were+)

Thanks David,
So far I have fixed the tach and learned about the speedometer situation. I'm not sure if the tach has been rebuilt for electronic ignition or if there is a tach adapter somewhere behind the dash but I got lucky when I removed the tach for a better look. There was a loose wire in the harness going to the tach. When I grounded it, the tach came to life!
As far as the speedometer goes, there is no speedometer cable attached to the speedometer and there is no mechanical speedometer gear drive on the transmission. This is a Getrag 265 that does have provisions for a mechanical drive, I just have to find the right parts that are apparently no longer dealer available. I understand these transmissions were used in many BMWs over the years so I'm pursuing that. Does anyone happen to have any of these or know where I can get them? I have attached a photo. Once these parts are located, apparently I will need to have a custom speedometer cable made with a "Jaguar" connection at one end and a "BMW" connection at the other end. Does anyone have any insight or sources for me please?
