Default Tires

I need advice on which tires I should get for my 1974 xke. I have done the research and am torn on whether to splurge on the rare and expensive 205 70 VR15 or spend a lot less and get 205 65 H 15. Also Blockly Tyres has the tires but to ship them to the US is over $200 per tire. Also what is the best course of action regarding reconditioning the wire wheels?

Two things, (1) the cheaper tyres should be checked to see what difference it will make to the speedometer reading, and (2), an 'H' rated tyre has a lower maximum speed. Here in the UK one has to be specially careful if non-original tyre sizes are fitted because of the insurance implications.
Check out using this internet app
Tyre Size Calculator
Bearing in mind the car's condition, if it were me, I'd bite the bullet and put the correct tyres on.

I had similar wires and replaced them. My choice was MWS (stainless wires, chrome rim). Dayton also make some interesting wheels.

One of the points mentioned above is actually about the circumference of the tire if it is not the same as the original tire, your speedometer will be wrong

As to the speed rating, how fast do you intend to drive? There are jurisdictions that care. I doubt that Texas is one of them.

For wheels, the only way to go is new. There are several manufacturers, Dayton, MWS, Borrani. I run Dayton wheels, which are tubeless and can be balanced on a standard machine without special fixtures. Recrhoming would cost you more than a new wheel.

Tires: try the various specialists: Lucas Tire, Coker, Universal. And don't count out Tire Rack, they have a small line of vintage tires as well. I bought my Vredestein 185R15's there.
