Default What SU carbs?

Hi all,

It has been a while since I've been here. Health issues, etc.

Does anyone know which SU carbs are used with a Series 1 Jag? HD5, HD6 Etc?

All the best,

Craig

Mike, would you happen to know if these are HD8's?

From the shape of the bottom of the float chamber, these look like the type HD. BUT, since they are only twins (the Jaguar HD.8, I think, always appeared as triplets - except in the 420 and 2.8 XJ6, but those would not have had the early metal damper heads). Plus from the significant height of the damper "chimney" (the HD.8 is much shorter - that's the main clue), I'm guessing these are a pair of HD.6. Do you know what model these are off of? From the manifold shape, it looks like it might have been the 3.4/3.8 Mk2/XK150, but then where is the thermostatic starting carb?

So Dr. Watson would say these are the HD.6. Sherlock Holmes, I ain't.

Another thought - if you have this ensemble in hand, flip it upside down and look for a part number cast into the bottom of the manifold, near the forward carb (e.g., C.nnnnnnn). This might point to the car type from which it came.

Thanks Mike. These "supposedly come off of an early XK, but I don't know for sure. The manifold number is - C12438. My hope is to sell them off, and in turn purchase a triple set-up for a 4.2 XJ6 engine. I'd love to get webers, but dang... it's an expensive venture! The "start-up carb" is missing, as is one float and both float bowl covers.

I researched the number and low and behold, it comes off of an early XK150. Good thinking Mike! Any idea if these will fit a 1986 4.2 engine? I have fuel injection, and want to scrap it because it is going in the custom Mark V I am building (so I really need the vintage look).

Dunno if the FI head's intake mounting geometry would match up with the carbs. Might require some custom fabrication? I assume you already know that the XK engine is significantly longer than the push-rod engine originally in the Mk V. I would assume that putting carbs on a FI XK engine is easier than putting an XK engine into a Mk V chassis.

Dear Mark

I have an Original Shop Manual for the Mark V. Part of Jaguar / Ferrari collection have been building for 40 years.

You have but to ask for information from the text.

Cheers Robert

Default An Interesting Piece of Kit...

SC

If you have an inline 6 from a XK150 it may be a 3.8 and not a 4.2 as they came along in 1965. But if it is a 3.8, I have a very rare 3.8 XK150 S 3 SU carb manifold with electric starter Carb.

Isn't that a co-incidence?

Send me a private Massage with engine/ head serial number and we'll see if we have a match made in heaven. When I saw this piece, I knew how rare it was and carbs which have now gone on to one of my E-types were perfect.

Congrats you seem to be your way to the perfect Jaguar Rest-o-Mod !

Cheers

Robert
