I have a very leaky 1970 Series II E-type. I ordered seals and gaskets. I dropped the oil sump.
My problem is that I do not see any rope seals. My maint. manual and parts book do not really
show the actual location of the seals. Befor I start further disassembly I thought I would send a couple pictures and
ask advice from those with more experience.
I was told that I could "tighten" the upper rope seal by forcing 3 mil pices of the new rope seal into the ends up the upper rope seal channel
and replace the lower rope seal. This could be done without removing the crankshaft.
However, I do not see any rope seals. Do I have to remove the rear most main bearing cap?
Has my car had a conversion to eliminate the rope seals in favor of the rubber seals?
Dan someone has confused you with the V 12 rear seal. You can push a small chunk in it but not a 4.2L.. Rear seal is a crankshaft out job which is an engine out job. When you do it PLEASE use the factory correct sizing tool. Do not listen to others!
Even Jaguar suggest using a hammer handle to insert the seal
This is from a 3.8 service manual but I am fairly confident that the 4.2 is the same, you will need to remove the flywheel/flex plate to R&R
Rob your ref. is accurate but ancient--Jaguar QUICKLY changed that to the use of a pre sizing tool. Using anything else will work but only for a short period and then the leaks come. Using the right tool in the correct manner will ensure success for many moons.
