Default 2016 F-Type R in Control

Good Evening - looking to resume my In Control subscription and was told Jag no longer supports the 2016 models.

Any one upgrade to the 4G module ? Does Jaguar really offer complimentary Module Upgrades?

They do not. My ‘16 still works on the 2G, kinda. Its subscription continues until next year for some reason. I’ve never paid for it.
My ‘17 is also on the 2G and the service was bad enough that I did not continue its subscription. I did ask my dealership if upgrading to a 4G telematics module was available and they said nope.

Oddly my 2016 didn't work for some time. I replaced the battery for it between the seats and still works like when I bought it. I just paid for my first year of the subscription last week.

You cannot 'upgrade to 4g' as the factory TCU module does not support 4G and the later modules are not backwards compatible with older cars. If there is a failure of the TCU, the current fix is to update the car CCF to remove it from the system, so the car still runs, but the result is a loss of all telematics functions. There are no plans to offer any other upgrades and those older TCUs are no longer in production by the manufacturer.

I am on my second subscription renewal for InControl Remote.. this is the application that allows you to track your 'journeys' as well as see where your car is... handy if you want to know if the shop has worked on it. You can also control the door locks, flash the headlights and sound the horn.
Followed the directions on the F forum (F telematics battery replacement)
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...nt-how-275525/

I just did the replacement over this past summer (2025), though was not having any issues with the system/unit. The battery I took out was date-stamped 2015, so it was good to get ahead of any problems. I bought the replacement on Amazon, but be advised.. those do NOT come date stamped. I sent the first one back for this reason and ordered another from a different vendor.. same thing, so I just put it in. Everything works as it should.
I anticipate renewing my ICR subscription.
What I'd REALLY like to have is a recent update to the NAV. My car only has a USB, no SD and JLR has ended that support as well. I spent much time going down this rabbit hole and as this car is 'transitional' in some respects, with a 2016 Nav system, there is NO Nav update more recent than 2018.

I renew the In Control each July on my 2016 with the 6-speed renewal cost of $70/year. I live in the Chicago area so it seems like a reasonable cost in the event that the car gets swiped.

I have the original telemetric battery in the car and have noticed that if the primary battery has a good charge, I never get the warning message about the telemetric battery being low.

The TCU BUB is a 4V Li-Ion battery pack and is charged when the engine is running, if the car battery never dies and forces the TCU battery to run down, they don't really go bad. I always have to replace them after the car died for some other reason, forcing the TCU to rely on battery power (as designed) to stay connected as long as possible, but once those batteries hit 0v, they almost never recover with the TCU charging them. I assume you could charge them outside of the unit and they may come back, but I have not tried.
