Perhaps said very bluntly: as a consumer I will openly wonder if I should by an EV from JLR if they cannot even address the need to move 3G cars to 4G cars ...EV's are bigger computers that will need more of this sort of thing (and may need more security updates....). Why invest in a company that cannot take care of its customers.....at some point that matters a lot to most people. From my point of view, JLR has taken very good care of me for the record so I am optimistic here. But the "update" department will need to be empowered into the next world we are about to enter....a lot.
For the record, discussed this on the home front and there is unanimity here that we'd be happy to pay to upgrade out car to 4 or even 5G from 3G. JLR, please just give us that option.
Yup! My next car will likely be an EV. I guarantee it will not be a JLR product. The way these guys handle updates is atrocious. A Jaguar EV would be a nightmare.

Agreed. As my 2016 is out of warranty I would assume I would pay to upgrade the telematics system to 4G and 500 bucks would be totally worth it to me. Higher than that would have me considering how long I would be keeping the car.
Agreed given that there are 4G modules out there, it should be feasible for JLR to come out with a software revision for the 3G telematics cars to allow them to function with 4G. As you say, the big IF is whether JLR consider it worthwhile at a business level. Maybe when the 3G lights go out, some enterprising hacker modders will decide to experiment and share their skunkworks projects...
I don't believe that a software update would be possible, unless the telematics module was already a 4G version with a 3G connection (not unheard of). I doubt that is the case in my 2016 at least. But if the module can be replaced today with another 3G module if it breaks, than retrofitting the 4G components into the 3G housing/connection should be also possible, from JLR official or otherwise...

sorry I wasn’t suggesting a software update would update the existing hardware to 4G. I meant a hardware update to a 4G module and possibly a software update to that hardware to talk to an older car, if not plug and play.
im not expecting it to be free (but that would be nice ) but even if paid for how many people at $500 would need to make it viable for JLR to do the right thing. They are a car company and make money selling you a newer one at the end of the day…

Let's put it this way, if they cannot figure out that keeping a current F-type (halo car) owner happy and getting a 3G to 4G+ thing in place is important to that, after selling a car to me that at retail was (in my case) $96k in 2016, then I don't think they will be the next car brand I buy. Or the next after that....this sort of thing, as I noted above, the update department, is part of the new EV world they are planning to jump head first into per their CEO. This is the least of things for them to have to do.
And those who have bought these cars are their most likely future customers .....it is cheap in that context even if they lose a little on each sale...I'd be in for say 300. I truly hope they "get" that logic.

I will say that JLR came through with retroactive support for CarPlay and Android Auto in the past. There were plenty of car manufacturers that did not. We had a 2016 F-Pace with InControl that was pretty much garbage for the first two years of the lease. By the third year, after several s/w updates InControl was eventually usable and we also, finally, got Apple CarPlay. The dealer did try and charge us for the privilege but that didn't fly. If JLR had not have stepped up, we would not have bought another Jag or Land Rover. Regarding 3G, it's not just the F-Type that is affected, so perhaps JLR will step up to the plate and find a solution. while not exactly JLRs fault, I do agree that $300 would be an acceptable charge.

I don't agree that it is not JLR's fault. Sure, the sundowning of 3G was out of their control, but the JLR engineers don't live in a bubble. The concepts of future proofing and modularity are basic principles. They knew (or certainly should have) that the next generations of communications were in development.
I agree with the $300 charge. I don't want something for nothing, I just want my car to work like it was originally sold, not like it's disposable.

Agree fully, all JLR cars will benefit...and they need every sale they can get to survive.

Gotchya, makes sense.
Yeah even as a paid fix they need to sort this out. As mentioned by a previous poster, people not only bought the car with this functionality, but have paid to renew access to these services. My inControl app shows I am licensed to have these services through 2026, this was an expectation I had when purchasing this car.
There is some hope. Posted today by one of the very active members of the fpaceforum:"Received this today from Jaguar in response to my inquiry:
”Our team of engineers is working alongside AT&T to determine a solution for the 3G sunset, but they have to announce what form or when that solution will be. Rest assured, all affected vehicle owners will be notified once a determination has been made.”"

Dear Affected Vehicle Owner,
our engineers have determined there is nothing we can do to update your vehicle. Here is a trade in voucher redeemable at your local dealer for a newer spec model. Enjoy.

I hope I’m being cynical.
Don't be shocked if you are right. Look @ what they did for us with the apps in a 2015. System is no longer supported. I can only hope they do something but will be surprised as historically they have not.
I am wondering if map updates via USB will still work after the 3G networks are all shut down. I know I will still be able to download a map to a USB drive and plug it into the car, but will the car recognize it as a new map? Part of the process now is the car telling me there is a new map update available. Without the car being able to know a new map update is available since it will have no way to find that out I am not sure it will recognize a new map and update it if I plug a USB drive into the car with a new map on it.

I think you’re safe. Most updates look for a specific file type on a usb media during startup. The notification and update processes are separate.

My car is a 2017. I have been trying to find out how to update the nav software since I got the thing several months ago. Two JLR dealers were of no help; one wanted to sell me the update (including labor) but they couldn't tell me what version they were offering. I am very disappointed in JLR.

This may help you, as I got an email direct from Jaguar trying to sell me the 2020 maps. I ignored it as I am planning to do a UAD head unit retrofit to get Android Auto:

Thank you very much for that. Unfortunately, when I put 2017 F-Type in that page it says the following: So f'ing frustrating. And nobody at JLR gives a ****.
(and my map data is from 2016.)
Yeah, I tried that website that you mentioned there. I added my account a month or so ago. At that time, when input my VIN it told me to input a valid VIN. It does the same thing now. I am getting to hate JLR. I predict that within two years of their going all electric, they'll be out of business.
