Good luck on getting 4G from manufacture. Years ago we had an Audi that came with Onstar. GM changed satellites and Onstar was gone.

Others have had the exact problem you are encountering. There are posts on the forum about it. I don't recall what the resolution was, or if there was one.

I don't understand why Jaguar just can't fit a tiny 4G module for the 3G to talk to. Step 1, Car's computer sends signal to the 3G module as per usual. Then, the 3G outputs to the 4G. The 4G communicates with the various cell networks to get the actual data. Next, data received by the 4G module is sent back to the 3G. Finally the car's computers read from the 3G being none the wiser about anything that's happened.

It's not like a 4G sim card, even in a holder, is all the big. Even if the 4G sim needed a whole separate transmitter and antenna, well that's still smaller than a credit card.

if the newer models are 4G enabled it would likely be cheaper in the current chip constraints to fit that as a replacement for the current 3G module. It might need a new SIM card and possibly new firmware but would be less costly and lead time faster than trying to get a slot building new hardware.

But the how comes after the “we will”…

Unfortunately, the "fix" for older MY's is to replace the car's telemetrics unit to a newer version that is compatible with the older system and capable of supporting LTE and/or 5G. (Make that units, plural, since there are two.) That may require some design, certification, and certainly testing. The easiest/cheapest answer is to do nothing. But, maybe not wisest if you p*ss off your customer base. Sometimes it's cheaper to make you current customers happy than to attract new ones.

Especially if you're dumping all your ICE models ....

Good to see that there's some kind of partial workaround coming up then.

The biggest mystery to me is why they didn't equip the older cars with 4G compatible hardware from the beginning... it's not like the technology was brand new back then. Just a matter of penny pinching I guess.

Looks like it may only be a temporary fix, the only 2G left is T Mobile which will sunset at the end of 2022.

Interesting...that bulletin states that "CarPlay/Android Auto have been provided to all vehicles except XJ". Does that mean that mean there is a software update for those with the Bosch/Harman touch screen cars to use CarPlay/Android Auto is in the works??

That is exactly what I asked my Service Manager at Imperial. He said if you had it, that’s all you will have going forward. If you never had it, like on my 2016 without the big screen, you’re SOL.

With all the fuss about 5G I am afraid I may never be able to land my F-Type again - presently circling over Boston!!

Does anyone know which cellular carrier Jaguar uses for all the in car systems? Are they all the same? Is there a way to check?

Reason I ask the 3G cellular networks are not all shutting down at the same time. It would be nice to know when the one the car uses is shutting down.

AT&T is shutting down their 3G network in February 2022.

Well if JLR doesn't come through, this might be key to a workaround.... MAYBE https://cellbounce.com/solution-3/

While I assume my 2021 came witha 4G chip (ATT), it has never been clear to me what it is for.
I use my Iphone in the car connected wirelessly with a dongle to the center USB slot.
The Iphone with CarPlay gives me up-to-date maps/navigation, phone calls etc with voice commands.
When I updated my built-in Jag. nav. maps I needed to download to a USB thumbdrive - nothing to do with the 4G chip.
When I did an OTA sofytware update, I believe the OTA connection was via my home wifi - not the 4G ATT chip..
What am I missing??

The cell modem is used for the SOS button/anti theft functions as well as to connect to the servers to lock and remote start from the APP

Thanks, Jagauf.
The in-control remote functions work, so hopefully the SOS/anti-theft will also if ever needed.

I don't think anyone knows for certain what in our cars is going to stop working when the 3G networks shutdown. The AT&T 3G network is scheduled to shutdown in February. Hoping for the best, but planning for the worst I did an In-Control update and a map update this morning just to be on the safe side.
