6Speed MT Pops & Cracks?
I'm about to order my 2016 F-Type S MT and was SO SADDENED to read in a thread that the decel pops & cracks of the AT were absent in the MT. Someone commented that they may come back after break-in? Anyone out there with a 6-Speed MT that can comment? I've been waiting to order my MT and now I'm having doubts since I love the sounds of the MT - I thought they'd be enhanced on the MT. What's the reality of the situation?
I would love to rid myself of the embarassing pops and crackles- they serve no function accept to draw attention to your car in a negative way. Spitting unused fuel into the headers for noise is window dressing. Even sport exhaust unless it opens up the airflow is just window dressing

What type of shifting are you doing with the manual? The pops are largely a function of throttle/rpm...you can definitely drive the auto around without pops...just keep the revs down. the car has a lot of torque, you can drive it normally with low revs and no pops.
I always double clutch a downshift at the upper end of the rev range. I'll use the synchros and see if that causes a difference in the popping.

And to amplify, most of the popping and crackling on the AT is a function of running it up to relatively high revs in manual mode, and then releasing the throttle to decelerate. It's also very pronounced when driving in sport or dynamic mode when manually downshifting to decelerate.
It happens to be one of my favorite things about the car, but it's entirely possible to drive it "tamely" (in regular and automatic mode) and not hear the "fireworks" at all. JLR has purposely programmed the ECU to inject a little extra fuel when the AT signals deceleration at a certain rpm, some of which is unburned in the cylinders, but ignites in the hot exhaust system. It's a nice little touch that virtually every car reviewer who has driven the car, as well as most owners express delight over.
Many months ago when the reviewers first got their hands on the MT, at least one reviewer expressed disappointment that the MT version did not make the same pleasing sounds. At that time, we had a brief discussion here, and I mentioned it didn't surprise me because I don't see how the MT could communicate with the ECU in the same way as the electronically controlled AT.
Lhoboy has confirmed the difference since taking delivery of his car, and he's the only owner we've heard from yet with an MT.

I uploaded another video. The crackles and pops still happen in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th in dynamic mode and active exhaust on.

lhoboy - the pops & crackles in the MT video posted above sound pretty good to me. Does yours sound similar?
After 800 miles, mine has started to pop and backfire pretty good on decel. Crackle, not so much. but that might be because I'm in the Coupe (windows always open though). I'm not a fan of cacaphonous crackles anyway, so I'm REAL happy with the harmonious sound that mine has. Throttle blipping and double clutching adds a whole new dimension to the sound these cars can make that the ATs are missing out on.
Must be the difference in cabin sound between the coupe and ragtop. (or I could be deaf in that frequency range)
The coupe really muffles the sound from inside the cabin. I had my girlfriend drive he car while I was outside. It's really toned down when sitting in the car vs hearing what other drivers hear

Damn, was I worried...
It's actually pretty quiet in the Coupe compared to standing outside and listening to all the "warfare" sounds.
The convertible is loud all the time, top up or down, and I love that. I also perceived the coupe to be much quieter during my test drives. Surprisingly though, there's very little wind noise with the top up.
Ok - I must say I was concerned about the possible lack of cacophony in the MT convertible, but now I'm nothing but excited. The sound was a major factor in my buying decision - I better check at the dealer to see if my radio works because it will get very little use for a while. Now, any tips on how to make the next 4 months pass more quickly??

Well over a year into my ownership of this car. I still find myself turning the sound system off most of the time so that it doesn't interfere with the lovely engine noises. That's the major thing I enjoy about it.
