Default Bad O2 Sensor - Am I going to have to pay for this?

I brought my car to the dealer and it needed replacement of an O2 sensor. For goodness sakes, it only has 23000 miles. The manufacturer’s warranty is good till July of 2018.

My service writer said it wasn’t covered and the cost would be $887 (Jaguar Marin). I forgot why.

I called him back and to check for recall K433 and K309. I’ve seen on this thread topics on O2 recalls for early FTypes within a given VIN range. Mine is K05525. A bad batch, I understand. Hope this works.

I also have a 3rd party extended warranty, but the “not covered” section said exhaust system is not covered so I’m most likely up the creek there.

It does not appear my service writer dug deep enough to see whether he can save me some bucks.

Just asking for some feedback.

If the manufacturers warranty is good till July 18 why are they asking you to pay?

It is covered! If your original warranty is still current you should demand them to cover it.

I would say failed O2 sensors are easily the most common issue - I had two replaced. You might try getting Jaguar USA involved if Marin sticks to their guns.

Looks like we have 6 heated O2 sensors (exhaust manifold, mid-cat and post-cat, x2). Due to the price, I'm guessing the failed one is on the exhaust manifold, as I think that would be hardest to get to.

Beyond warranty from the manufacturer, aren't O2 sensors considered to be part of the federal emissions requirements? And if not federal, I am betting some agency in California has a vested interest here in wielding a hammer...

Plus one. I thought emissions devices were covered for 100k miles or 10 years.

I think the covered devices of 100K miles/10 years are just the cats. O2 sensors out of warranty are treated as any other out of warranty item. But I would agree, unless they can successfully claim it is a "wear and tear" item like wiper blades or brake pads, this should be a valid warranty item. Maybe time to find a second opinion and another dealer...

Reading through the emission control system warranty in the 'Passport to Service' is pretty interesting. For MY14, federal law required 2 year/24,000 mile coverage, which Jaguar 'voluntarily' increased to 4/50,000. Select components are covered for 8/80,000.

The catalytic converter is one of the few components to get the 8/80,000 warranty, but O2 sensors are NOT listed as covered at all under the emissions warranty.

Here's an electronic copy of the MY14 'Passport to Service'.

I thought the O2 sensor was a known part defect and replaced with no problem. If there is a bulleton there should be no charge even without warranty, but only fixed if problem shows up.

Default They didn’t charge me after all

It would have left a bad taste in my mouth.

The culprit was Heated Oxygen Sensor - Post catalyst - Left Bank /each - renew
1 C2D54167

“Confirmed check codes has had bad heated circuit on Bank2 Sensor3 O2 sensor. Recommended replacement. code PO162 and P0062
Replaced O2 sensor, reset adaption cleared codes. operation normal.”

Thanks! I appreciate all the feedback.
