On my way from New York to Boston to visit my brother for a car show (mainly for his Dino), I started getting a battery charging error on my car. My 2017 V6 S, new to me this past November, had a new battery put in before I purchased it. (It now has 10k miles; 2.5k from me.) I had driven about two hours before I got this message. I continued on and stopped by a dealership who could not do anything for me but told me the car will not make it so I turned around and tried to go home. I kept in he right lane on 95 and sure enough, my car started going ape s—t with other errors so I got off the road. It then died on the service road. As luck would have it, I was 2 miles from a Jaguar dealer and had AAA tow me there. Of course I called the dealership beforehand and they gladly took the car. Being my lucky day I was 1 mile from the metro north train station so I could get home. Let’s see what happens but they even said they’ve only had one issue with an alternator on these cars in the past.
if it is the alternator I was just wondering what’s required to replace it and what other service I should do including the coolant pipes that would be easy to get to. Thanks.
They should look carefully at the negative post battery connection. I had a similar situation and found that the post clamp was not all the way down on the tapered post and had become loose. The small wire Connection to the negative ground cable clamp is where the battery gets its charge status info.
If it's the alternator, it's a simple repair (although the part may be pricey). I don't think there's any real synergy on other repairs. The coolant pipes is a good thought, but you (they) wouldn't really be getting into much dismantling.
Yes it is the alternator too. It is only $1500 plus labor. Lucky I have an aftermarket warranty that should cover it. That really makes sense. I did not use the car for almost 3 weeks and it was fine for 2 hours driving. Let's hope that is all that is needed.
