Default Better? or Worse? 1 or 2? (optical test)

My boss got an AMG GT (I kinda helped, long story).
And I got the Coupe R Ftype

I may be prejudiced but.... the F-Type is just --- smoother, sexier, etc etc (plus i think 100+ HP?) I'll fact-check on that...

They're actually a bit hard to compare.

All F-Types, I4, V6, and V8 are great GT cars. The AMG GT/S is a bit more "hardcore". The chassis is stiffer, the ride is harder, the transmission is a true DCT, and lastly, the interior is of much higher quality. Additionally, AMG uses true Brembo six pot front, four pot rear calipers with floating discs.

If the Jaguar F-Type is a 7/10 car, the AMG GT is 8.5/10 in terms of best of breed parts, technology, and build quality.

Looks are obviously subjective so no one is either right or wrong there.

The biggest negative with the Mercedes is the DCT. It is actually horrendous around time / daily driving. Faster than a speeding bullet, but major clunker around town! I would rather have the ZF8 with a bit slower change but buttery smooth every day over the AMG for that reason alone.

Nice car though, terrific performance, and it wants to really run all day long!

Oh yeah, gear shifter is in a stupid location with a bad setup as well. Not sure if they improved that, but it was strange. I didn't find the cabin very comfortable, and visibility over that infinite hood wasn't the best either.

First world problems!

Since you say this is an optical test it's irrelevant that I haven't driven the Mercedes. The F-Type looks sleek and muscular. The AMG looks boy-racerish.

Let's not forget the AMG GT is RWD...

In terms of looks, that photo doesn't do it justice The flairs and wing take away from the line and in person, it is a thing of beauty. I'm also betting their budget for the infotainment system was more than the F-Type's entire budget. My point there is it more finished.

In terms of outright looks, F-Type, hands down, all day. At the same time, the AMG GT is a beauty.

I believe the AMG GT pictured above is the AMG GT-R PRO, which is why you see all those additional "boy racer" aero parts on the car. The regular AMG GT is a much cleaner design and I think it looks more exotic on the road. As others stated, dollar to dollar it is a higher quality and better performing car.

You actually do bring up good points. The visibility, particularly over the hood, is quite poor. However, I've never heard of anyone complaining about the Dual Clutch trans being clunky. Are you sure your driving experience was related to the trans? Single clutch automated manuals like Lamborghini e-gear and BMW's SMG are usually the clunkers, never DCT.

Tough, but I'm afraid I'd have to go with the AMG GT-R if presented with a choice like this. The Benz is a much higher quality automobile, fit/finish is as good as you can get and the tech is light-years ahead of Jag.

Fun/$ is much better on the F-Type.

Technically yes, but same can be said if you compared a $10k Miata to our F-Type.

I'd take the GT if given a choice but as mentioned, the price premium is significant! Same can be said for the 911, etc. - the F type is very good value IMO

FWIW, HP ratings are identical at 550/502 and the weight of the AMG is a bit less....mostly from the RWD vs. AWD most likely.

I haven't driven an AMG GT but the DCT (PDK) in the Porsches I've driven were a bit clunky at low speeds......not enough to prevent me from buying one but definitely noticeable compared to the ZF8 (which I think is a great transmission)

At $10k yes, but they go for around $30k new. The F-Type is still a better fun value.

Don't know why we're arguing about this, but $30k new miata vs $60k new I4 F-Type... The I4 F-Type is not twice the fun. I'd still argue the Miata is the better fun value.

Yeah...this argument isn’t worth the risk of getting banned from the forum. Besides, the Miata isn’t even within the scope of this thread.

We're keeping it civil and respectful though?

I think the cheapest F Type looks a lot prettier than the cheapest AMG, but maybe the most expensive AMG looks meaner than the most expensive F Type. The GT in the picture looks as though it belongs on a race track. That appeals to my inner ******. The F type in the picture would look pretty anywhere, it appeals to my inner gentleman. I'd drive the AMG but I'd feel very self conscious.

Owning the F-Type has substantially increased my desire to get a Miata actually...

It would be a bit strange to like cars but only like ONE in particular

Agreed. It would be strange. I've got an NA6 Miata that is fun, but much different fun than the F-Type. I can have fun at 35 in it, while feeling like I'm going fast.
