Agreed.
But how many F-Type owners will ever see it?
Just a tiny fraction of "enthusiasts" like those on this board, and even then you have to remove the cover panel to see it.
I'm thinking the JLR beancounters decided it was not cost effective to fix this gap.

I clicked on this thread because a firewall/bulkhead crack would be a very serious thing......this isn't a crack as the other's mentioned, nor is it any part of the structural aluminum unibody....guess we can relax!

If you drove with the carpet pulled out it would look pretty dreadful too. Us engineers don't really care what anything looks like beyond what the customer can easily see. If its hidden and its cheaper/more efficient to make it look like crap, we'll go that route 100% of the time.
One thing that annoys me is that too many cars that don't have neat under wheel above pedal space. Would it KILL to put a plastic panel there? Yes, people actually see that area. Sometimes.
XFs and XJs have panels there, they are called "hush panels". But they are made of rather thin and flimsy carpet-like material, they don't fit all that brilliantly (they tend to sag a bit at the front edges), and they can be a real PITA to refit once you pull them out (as you need to do to replace the footwell light globes). On my XFR I left the driver's side one off for many months as it got in the way of the OBD2 port, and I never noticed any difference in sound or appearance when sat in the car. I fully understand why JLR decided not to fit hush panels on the F-Type.

+1. As an ME, internal elegance is just as important to me as external aesthetics.

Not when you're limited in cost and packaging you don't. If it costs an extra $5 a car and 2 pounds to make something you can't see pretty, it's never gonna get done.
In the case of our cars there is a line to tiptoe. Yes they could have had a better finish on that part, they could have also improved on many other things but the car would have cost a fair bit more if that was the case.
