Default Burning smell from rear - diff??

Recently noticed a burning smell from the rear of the car after it has been driven. Could it be a leaky diff?

Car is a 14 V8S with 22k miles Warranty expires mid January so race against time to get it booked in and looked at!

Sounds like you have your answer... Diffs don't typically smell like burning when they leak, more so when they become overheated.

Could some oil or something else be burning off your muffler?

That's a stretch. The exterior of mufflers typically aren't hot enough to cook diff oil. Exhaust is relatively cool by that point.

When I've seen that in the past, it turned out to be a plastic bag or similar that had stuck and melted to a hot component like the exhaust and was slowly burning off. But as others above say, you have warranty so let the dealer explore

It can get hot enough to smell, it can be a shopping bag that got picked up while driving over it (happened to me) and was lodged by the valves cooking off the 2.5" pipes and smelling badly

Then why do I have leg burns from the exhaust tips?
My vote is that a plastic bag has melted to the tailpipe. Hot diff oil smells like rotten eggs. You'd know if it was diff oil.

Definitely not rotten eggs - thanks very helpful, will update the group after it goes into the dealer.

Sticking brake pads also stink.

Just a thought...

Our LR4 had the sticking brake pad smell. Somewhat of a pre-ignition (for those than can recall) type smell.

For those that said plastic bag stuck to the exhaust - bingo!

Dealer is trying to scrape it off now.

Glad you worked it out. Amazing the hassle that a simple plastic bag can have...
