Default Caliper Paint

Hey guys,

Anyone use the G2 paint system and comments. Also I would like to paint mine to match the Firesand Orange. Has anyone used their standard orange and how close a match is it?
Is it close enough or do I need to spend $125 for the paint match maybe 2x as they mention oversize calipers requiring 2 kits?

Please any help would be great!

I use G2 gloss black caliper paint about 17 years ago on my M Roadster and it still looks like new. So it has held up very well and that includes some track days. So the brakes where well used.
I'm going to look into having mine powder coated Firesand Orange if I can. I don't know how the color match is though. I have a local custom paint shop that is VERY good that I am going to go to and let them decide the best way to go for the best color match. I trust their advice a whole lot better than internet opinions.

Good Luck,
Wayne B.

Default Firesand caliper paint

Just an fyi to anyone with a Firesand Orange paint code EAT. I just ordered 2 of the custom kits from G2 in this paint code. I also asked for a color swatch of their standard orange to compare once I do my calipers.
I think it takes 10 days to 2 weeks for the kit to arrive. I will follow up with pictures and let you know if the standard orange is a close enough for the girls we go with so nobody has to spend he extra money if not needed.
I am taking one for the team ha! The 2 kits cost $249 shipped

I have a Black edition 2017 F-Type, I wanted to paint match the calipers to the center cap as it is the only red I have on the car. I bought a can of high temp spray at Oriely's and it matched well with the center caps. Its only been 4 months

Can't speak to color-matching, but we have two cars (including our DD) where the G2 paint is holding up for more than a decade.

In the DD's case that is about 185,000 miles. (I HAVE needed to touch up a couple spots due to my own clumsiness when changing/rotating wheels)

Thank you for taking one for the team. I've been debating doing this for a while. Of course if I let my girl get filthy the red doesn't clash as bad so it only really bothers me right after a wash. I should have looked into it during all this staying at home while I'm not driving much (mostly been taking the bike(s) when I do go out even).

I plan on buying a pair of scissor jack to be able to lift the car and do all 4 wheels at once.
jacking points are on the side correct? I think unhinged has recommended how to do this without damage to the car?
is the car safe to jack and leave on over night while the caliper dry?

Once the car is secure on jackstands, you can leave it as long as you want. Rest easy, while the paint dries.

Just remember, ANY paint takes longer to dry if you watch it!

Which scissors jacks are you looking at? I've been debating this for a while. Considered Twin Busch, but don't like the idea of it always being there to drive over. Really leaning toward Quick Jax. Thoughts?

I am going to buy a set either 2 or 4 independent scissor jacks from tractor supply they have a wide base and are about $20 each?

Btw just got a tracking number from G2 it looks like my paint will be here Thursday the wife and I will do the caliper this weekend as long as no rain.

I did request the swatch sample of the standard orange to compare once they are painted. I will give my recommendation after I paint mine with the custom Firesand
Paint code. I plan on taking some before and after pictures. I will show the swatch up against the custom paint as well for anyone interested to see.

I figure it will take 2 to 3 hours to clean and mask all 4 (Prep)
2-3 hours to do the paint work. I am going to try to do all 4 with one kit. I ordered 2 to be safe.

The standard kit is $59
custom kit is $125

You never know the standard paint may be close enough being behind the wheels and with shadows and such?

I did all 4 calipers of my DD with one G2 kit of standard red, and had enough left over to paint the spots on my parking lift where hot tires had been lifting the paint.

did you remove your calipers to paint them?

does the cover plate on the fronts come off without removing the calipers or will I have to paint with it on?

looking for more then one persons opinion? maybe unhinged?

You don't need to remove the calipers to paint them, you can paint them "on car" with either a rattle can or a brush with little trouble or problems.
I have lost count of the number of times I have painted calipers using a rattle can of caliper paint, always with the calipers in place, and never once had a problem.
The only prep I do is to thoroughly clean the calipers with degreaser, turps, brakes cleaner, meths etc (depends on how dirty/grotty they are and what I have to hand) and tape off the brake rotors (with masking tape) either side of the caliper. Then once the paint is dry I peel off the tape and clean up any over-spray with turps. Any left on the swept surface of the brake rotor gets rubbed off completely after just a couple of brake applications.
The "cover plate" is an anti-rattle spring and you can either leave it place and paint over it or remove it and replace it afterwards (with or without painting it).
I'm a lazy sod so I tend to leave it on and just paint all over and around it, works for me!
It's a piece of cake to flip off with a screwdriver, no need to remove the caliper, but it can be a little difficult to refit. The 355 mm version (like yours) is not too hard but the 380 mm version can be a right royal PITA unless you have the technique down pat.

Does the cover just pop off with a screw driver. I Believe I have the larger brakes I measured. I would like to do it the easiest way as long as I can make it look good.
Whats the trick for getting them on or off?

Thanks

I was commenting on the pics in your recent post #13 as they are definitely 355 mm brakes so I stupidly assumed it was your car!
IIRC you have a V8 and if so you have the 380 mm front brakes for sure.
Yes, the ant-rattle clip pops off very easily with a medium to large flat blade screwdriver, just stick it under the middle of the spring part and lever gently. Be warned, it will spring off (it is a spring duh!) with quite a bit of force and probably go flying across the other side of your garage/shed/driveway/whatever.
But as I said the easiest way is not to bother taking it off, just paint the whole kit and caboodle in place.
If you really want to take the clip off then this is my method for refitting it (others have used different methods including using one or more zip ties):
1. Enlist the aid of a helper with strong fingers!
2. Place the two ends/feet where they go (take note of the position BEFORE you spring the clip off!), you will need to apply a fair bit of force to them (bend them a little) to get them both in place.
3. Get your helper to hold those feet in place by pressing them in towards the car, and make sure they keep pressing with all their might until you have finished the next step.
4. Now grab a large flat blade screwdriver, place the tip under the middle of the spring part, lever the cover/plate "up and in" until the spring bit goes in past the edge of the caliper, and push/tap it gently in so that is is sitting back hard against the caliper. It needs to go up/in about 1 cm before it locks into the correct spot.
5. The first time you try this there is a good chance you will dislodge one or both of the little metal clasps on the ends of the feet, you need to grab it/them and put it/them firmly back in place otherwise the clip won't do it's job. Just slide it/them back on and squeeze tight with pliers.
6. If at first you don't succeed try try again!

My calipers already came in my preferred color. I have no experience with painting them.

The G2 paint levels VERY well even when applied with a brush. I've done silver and red, never needed a second coat. (The mixed paint 'cures' in a few days anyway, so one session is all you will get out of them.)

The G2 kits come with everything you need: Paint, catalyst, brake cleaner, brush, even gloves.

Did you do yours on the car or remove them? For the fronts did you remove the cover plate or paint that in place as well.
Just trying to get as much feedback as I can before I do this. I want it to look great!
