Default CEL - O2 Sensors - Cost Out of Warranty??

I have a 2014 V6-S with only 14K miles. Out of warranty for 4 months. Car has always run fine but my CEL came on recently (I was running the car hard but nothing crazy - pushed it up to 5500 RPM and noticed light came on). I've had the car in twice when I first bought it when light came on and was told O2 sensors had to be replaced.

Has anyone had O2 sensors replaced out of warranty? i'm curious what a 'fair price' is for this repair.

Also are there any concerns about having the ECU flashed? I've haven't had the car into the dealership for a few years - I've had oil changes at my local Jag shop. I've heard rumors that an ECU flash might 'quiet' the pops and crackles I love so much.

Any feedback?

TY!!

If the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp/Light) is on, what DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Code(s)) are stored? DO NOT operate the vehicle under any conditions that cause the MIL to flash as catalyst damage is occurring.

I don't have a code reader so I don't know. Will be bringing the car into the dealership this morning so I should know shortly. And to clear - it's the light on the dash that's 'the shape of the engine'. I call it Check Engine Light but when you refer to as Malfunction Indicator Light I think we are talking about the same thing. And no - it isn't flashing. The car seems to me to be running fine with no loss of power (maybe minimal loss of power but that just may be my mind playing tricks on me). In any event my suspicion is O2 sensor and I'm sure others have had O2 sensors replaced Out of Warranty. Curious what the 'market' price is for this service repair. I'm bracing myself for the worst. (The next question is do I trust my local shop to do the repair to avoid the dealership gouge)

If its one of the most downstream (after the cats) O2 sensors they are about $230 each (from dealer) and fairly easy to do yourself - it took me longer to jack up the car than to replace the sensor. My dealer quoted me $350 to do the job.

Good news: there is O2 sensor recall
Bad news: Part of this recall is ECU patch that will substantially reduce pops out of V6, and the fix is only available for V8.

Doesn't seem to affect all V6s, for whatever reason.

Default Denso O2 sensors

Well I checked on the Denso web-site and for a V8 2016 R the O2 sensors are

Find My Part

denso 234-5154 upper same for Left/right
denso 234-4792 down stream left
denso 234-4794 down stream right

all are about $97 on ebay

But do buy a code reader

For a V6 2014

denso 234-5153 upper same for Left/right
denso 234-4791 down stream left
denso 234-4794 down stream right

So I would change them yourself way cheaper.

I had a bad O2 sensor about 2 months before the factory warranty ended. It was bank 2, sensor 3. My service writer somehow overlooked that my factory warranty was still in place and quoted me around $900 for that particular sensor. I guess it was the hardest one to get at, or maybe he was just talking thru his hat. Bottom line - I wasn’t charged.

I ran across this regarding Federal Emissions Warranties as well. Here is the link and hopefully you might not have to pay for it. At least bring this up with your dealer and their warranty administrator. Its North Carolina but it does say Federal extended emissions warranties.

That one is the one I mentioned above. Its the easiest to replace. Your dealer was trying to gouge you.

Since it's out of warranty, don't allow them to update the flash.

In regards to your question about a change in exhaust sounds, I just found this note I had made for myself. I believe that I have K309b installed on mine, with no change in exhaust sound. Chances are I found the following on this forum at some point and copied it. I think it's 'release notes' for SDD versions, and perhaps only applies to MY14/15...

SDD update V145.07
14MY > 15MY F-TYPE / X152
This update contains a software update to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to resolve a concern relating to the reduction of exhaust noise after an update for the oxygen sensor has been completed when following K309 Service Action. This is to support an active Service Action K309.

SDD145_08_V240J - Jaguar SDD software-update 145_07 release note

Default Are We Having Fun Yet??

So turned out to be TWO oxygen sensors. (mind you 2 were already replaced under warranty). I hemmed a little and they knocked $100 off to get the price down to $828. I figured I'd have them do the repair and just put it behind me - even though I still can't believe i have to pay to repair a $92K car with just over 13K miles on it. So I pull in to my driveway and lo-and-behold the check-engine light just came on again.

UGH!!

I know there's little chance of my view being adopted by dealer service departments but I expect most owners will pay for out of warranty parts and labour if it fixes the fault and If incorrect diagnosis leads to replacement of parts that don't fix the fault then the dealer refunds cost of parts and labour to fit

It might incentivise thorough diagnosis rather than the approach that might be expected from technicians without appropriate training and access to SDD which would seen to be replacement of parts in the hope of fixing the problem .

I have experience of non faulty parts being replaced even by Jaguar specialist with an excellent reputation although they acknowledged the parts initially replaced weren't required to fix the fault but justified charging for them by explaining that their replacement was beneficial for preventing future problem
