Exclamation Code P2138?

This has been an interesting week for codes on my 2017 F-type. Saturday "restricted performance" appeared on the dashboard, my obd2 code reader read P2138. According to Jaguar's website, P2138 = Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) assembly failure, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) failure, Wiring issue. I did not reset the code and immediately drove it back home.

I didn't drive the car on Sunday.

Monday morning, I called my local Jaguar dealership as it is still under warranty. They recommended bringing it in immediately. When I started up the car to drive there, the code had cleared itself and nothing on the dash indicating an error. I called Jaguar back, explained the code was not active and scheduled an inspection for this coming Friday morning.

Code came back on Wednesday with a check engine light as company but no "restricted performance" error.

This morning (Thursday), code again cleared itself and no check engine light but I had "low battery" warning on the dash.

Is it Friday yet?

Original to the car, so 3 years old.

What is the manufacture date on the car ? its on the drivers door sill. That would be the date that battery was installed. The date of manufacture on my 2017 was Jan. 2016 . Its over 4 years old on my car. I'm replacing it this week to be on the safe side. I don't like tow trucks.

Thanks for the pointing that out! Just checked the door seal, 05/2016. So it is coming up on 4 years. Now I'm seeing if anyone at my work has a multi-meter I can use to test it.

If you read all the threads on here about battery problems causing instrument qurks and worse you will change yours and I hope others will chime in here to verify this.

A voltage check will not give the health of the battery. It needs to be checked with a load on it.

Yep, I would put the mutlimeter across the terminals and see if it was at 12v+, then 14v+ while the car is running.

I will definitely read through the forums about the battery problems.

Thanks again for the information!

The low battery warning after using an OBDC device could be the well-documented ODBC problem, not necessarily indicative of a bad battery. Even a good battery will be low after sitting overnight with electronics active. That's not to say the battery doesn't need replacement. My car is about that age and on its second battery.

The code reader was only plugged in for a few minutes. But, I do have a dash cam installed (I purchased one for my previous car, 2015 BRZ, after I was involved in a hit and run). The dash cam never drained the BRZ battery. The F-type is driven everyday and long trips on most weekends. It sits in a garage at both home and work, so the motion detection shouldn't be triggered often.

I just unplugged it.

Definitely going to have the battery tested at the dealer tomorrow.

Thank you for all the feedback.

Most, if not all people know that opening an F-Type means having to carry an adjustable spanner (wrench) in the boot (trunk).

This is to whip off the +ve terminal, leave for 20 secs or so and reconnect - the magic reboot may be all it needs?

The OBDC issue with the F-Type isn't that the device runs the battery down, it's that it puts the ECU into a state where it never goes to sleep, even after you've unplugged the device. I contend it's a software defect, but it seems that it will never be addressed.

Look for the warning triangle on the dash before you turn the ignition on. If it's lit, the ECU never went to sleep.

I carry this lithium starter in the storage bin behind the seats:

Has rescued me once to restart the car (OEM battery) and once to open the boot to push the reset button on my primary lithium battery.

Interesting tool, such lithium starter. For >3,5L they recommand a version with more capacity.
Concerning battery life I have one tester, also from Ebay. I already found some near to dead batteries with this one :

Looks like that load tester could test a batteries health.
