Default finally got code p0460

Hi guys, finally went out and bought an obdII reader ( on sale 50% off at canadian tire this week)

code that comes out is p0460

not much on this forum about the code...

from what i can tell its : DTC code P0460 active. (Fuel level sensor circuit open). Indicated fuel tank level occasionally inconsistent and reading low, but usually approximately correct.

which is weird because my gas guage is ok ...

Anyone have any knowledge of this code ?

Have you cleared the code to see if it comes back? We do not get this code often and I am a little hesitant providing direction other than check your battery.

Well Gus, the check engine light actually went away but then came back a few days later.

Thanks !

Also have your battery checked. Do you know how old it is?

Take the car to an AutoZone or any place that can perform a full load test on the battery for you unless you have a tester yourself.

You think the bad battery would cause the ecu to throw a code?

Exclamation P0460 engine code.

Hello Gus, this code popped up yesterday after swapping the transmission on the '03 xj8. yes, the car has been sitting for a while and I had to jumpstart it 3-4 times to drive around. during my last drive home, I started getting misfires. I haven't come across any new codes except the P0460 codes. Upon further research, I discovered that a bad fuel pump and fuel level sensor can cause a misfire too.

after reading your previous message, I decided to have my current battery checked. and just as you pointed out the battery was faulty. it couldn't hold any charge. I bought a new battery but the error code is still there and I still get some misfires.
  • I noticed the fuel gauge fluctuates a lot. giving random and irregular readings (seats at 3/4 when turned on but drops to a 1/4 once it's idling. It then gradually creeps to the 1/2 mark but never stays in one place until it returns to the 1/4 mark).
  • an exhaust slip is also present. will this cause a misfire?
  • The ABS light is on (the car's info screen reads an ASC and TRAC warning message). I know this shouldn't cause a misfire.
any advice would be helpful. I'm thinking of looking into the fuel pump and sensor before looking at the exhaust slip. however, if there is any other solution that involves less time and money, I'm all in.
