Default ECO Button

Has anyone else experience the engine not coming back on after brakes release. This has happened twice (so not leaving it on anymore) and once engine call back on but somehow now in park so engine raced until I noticed it? Appoint this Friday, hope it left some type code on computer, I am to stupid to remember to turn it off all the time because I am in a hurry to get the car out of the garage and on the road to have fun!

Yes, that behavior has been reported. Note that with the transmission in P, with ECO on, if you take off your seatbelt, that will shut off the ignition and you'll have to restart it.

Many of us never (or seldom) use ECO mode. Those of us with Dynamic mode tend to use it nearly all the time, and in 2014-2015 models, dynamic mode cancelled ECO. Not sure that's still the case.

Stick it in Sport. It switches Eco off.

I thought there was a software update that fixes the ECO related bugs. I've experienced the ECO bug putting the car in a weird mode before...luckily I rarely use it.

There is a software update for this. It's a July 2015 release. The update addresses the car putting itself in neutral. There is more detailed info on this posted somewhere but I can't find it.

The other ECO issue I've heard about is the car restarting, but not in gear. I'm usually in Dynamic mode (as DJS said), so I don't have a lot of experience with ECO, but the symptom is that the gear indicator on both the dash and shift lever flash "P." If you see it, go ahead and turn the car off and restart before the light turns green. Both are supposed to be software issues that are easily fixed by the dealer.

All F-Types, including base cars, in '14-15 have Dynamic mode, and it does automatically turn Eco-mode off. I would assume that's still the case in '16, but don't know for sure either.

Switching to Sport mode also effectively turns it off even though the light may still be lit. In addition, just a single paddle downshift prior to stopping, even in auto mode, also precludes an Eco-mode shutdown. However, your paddles have to be enabled (in the steering wheel setting menu) in auto mode to make this work. Mine always are.

There are so many ways to keep the engine from shutting down at a stop, given the way I drive the car, I have to completely change my driving habits to see if it's still operational. Otherwise, I'd never see it.

Not sure if this works for MY14 and 15, but on MY16 which now have electric power assist, turning the steering wheel makes the engine turn back on as well when in Eco mode.

It will if you are shifting with the paddles. It also will in dynamic mode. Automatic sport mode without dynamic mode engaged will not defeat Eco mode.

I've gotten in the habit of pressing three buttons when I get in the car.

1. Start button
2. ECO mode button (to turn it off)
3. Sport exhaust (to turn it on)

It's a habit now, I don't even think about it anymore.

Can't you just unhook the second battery in the trunk and be done with the entire ECO mess permanently?

That's been discussed ad nauseum. Yes, but lots of us don't want to. Plus, that only works if you have two batteries although on the single battery models there is a connector to pull that does the same thing.

+ 1

Did the same first two with my previous Touareg, so it has long been a habitt.

I don't regard it as a "mess" if it's working properly, and mine always does. I've never had any glitch. If I'm stuck in city or highway gridlock, I leave the car in standard auto and let it work. My car has always restarted instantly before I could get my foot back on the throttle pedal.

If I don't want it to shut down at a stop and I'm in auto mode, I simply paddle one downshift, which temporarily defeats it regardless of what mode I'm in.

You're obviously thinking about driving when you're behind the wheel. Some of us are a little less focused and are surprised and annoyed when the car shuts off, particularly when it doesn't start back up as designed. Usually when it is cold at the first stop sign half a block from my garage in my case.
