Default F-Type Mode Control Switch

Happy New Year fellow Jaguar enthusiasts! I’m new to the forum but been following content for a while now. Regarding the Jaguar F-Type (2016MY) I’m looking for some specific advice on how to access and change the mode
control switch in the center console. I haven’t been able to find any step by step instructions and before I start taking the trim apart I wondered if anyone has experience of this job and could provide advice. I’m changing the color of my switches so will be doing paddles, start-stop switch and mode control at the same time. Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Pull it towards the checkered flag for Dynamic mode and push towards the snow flake for snow mode.

Thanks for the reply but I was looking for advice on how to remove and replace the mode control switch assembly, not how to operate it. Sorry if my initial request was unclear.

This video will show you how to remove the shift console and from there I believe removal of your switch should be straight forward.

Thanks. I’ve see this and other similar YouTube videos but what I’ve been unable to determine is whether the mode control switch can be released from the top (after removing the trim piece shown) or whether further disassembly is required to access the connector and retaining clips (or retaining screws). I was wondering if anyone had hands on experience of doing this job and could advise from that. Thanks for taking the time to read and post your reply, appreciated.

There are 4 screws on the sides that retain the whole switchpack/surround bracket for the shifter, you will most likely have to pull that out and then unscrew the separate switches as needed.

I was looking in Topix for the specific mode control switch but it doesn't have it's own repair instructions. The shifter surround comes out as a unit with the switches on it though, which should get you what you need.

Perfect, that’s the advice I was looking for. I’ll be doing the job next weekend, will update after. Thank you and the others who have commented.

If you run across something that you may need the workshop manual for, let me know and I will supply the procedures if I can find them. The Ftype interior is fairly simple to pull apart, mostly clips and a few small screws, but some of it is layered in a way that isn't really intuitive if you haven't seen one come apart before. The video linked will be more of a help though, as watching someone do it is way better than the 'remove this component' lines that make up most of the workshop manual, even if they have a static picture.

What are you doing with the lighting?

@RoverJoe Thanks again for the reply. I'm changing the existing black/aluminum colored parts for Ignis Orange (bronze) - stop/start switch, mode control and steering wheel paddles. I have OEM parts to exchange. I prefer them with my color scheme (BRG with jet/camel interior) but will keep the originals in case they need to be changed back at any time in the future. From the posted video, I'm assuming the center console side panels also need to be removed to access the 4 retaining screws that you mention. You're right in that a picture (or video) is worth a thousand words! Hopefully a straightforward job once I get started, I just like to gather as much info as I can before starting to pull things apart.

Update - Job Done (Step by Step instructions below if anyone needs for future reference). It's a little fiddly, but with patience nothing that can't be done. Needs a decent set of trim removal tools (various shapes and sizes) to ensure trim is removed without damage. Thanks @RoverJoe and others for the advice.

2016 Jaguar F-Type - Mode Control Switch - Removal and Replacement:
  1. Disconnect battery
  2. Carefully release center console top trim panel (8 metal ‘u-clips’) - wiggle panel rearwards to access electrical connectors
  3. Disconnect stop-start switch and power socket. Remove trim panel completely.
  4. Carefully remove both center console side panels (15 metal ‘u-Clips’ on each side (13 stainless steel around the edges and 2 black ones near center of the panel). There's also a small plastic hook on the rear edge - needed to slide trim slightly rearwards to remove once all clips are released
  5. Remove 4xT30 black Torx head screws from side of center console (these are the main retaining screws for the switch module - two on each side)
  6. Remove 4xT20 Torx head screws (visible from top of switch panel)
  7. If necessary, black away two black plastic lugs with a flat head screwdriver (I did this reluctantly after a lengthy attempt to pry the switch module out of the center console without doing so but in the end it seemed to be the only way). Lugs are in slots close to the rear most black Torx screws removed in previous step. It seems strange to have to break these but retention is secure with the four screws. You can see the broken lug in one of the pictures below. Other side is in similar location.
  8. Disconnect wire harness connector on right hand side of center console (at the bottom) and release plastic retaining clips. This allows the harness to pull through when you remove the switch module. At this stage also disconnect radio volume control knob to make module easier to remove.
  9. Carefully remove entire module. Takes a bit of wiggling around - lifting it up and rearwards is the general direction it needs to move. It’s a bit fiddly but once that connector is released the entire switch module can be lifted and slightly turned, underside towards the drivers side of car.
  10. Once module is clear of the console and turned as described above there are 4 more T20 Torx head screws on the underside of the module. Remove these and the module will separate providing access to the mode control switch connector (retaining feature faces the inside which makes it a bit tricky to see). There are also two retaining screws (T20 torx head). After releasing the connector from the switch and removing the retaining screws remove the mode control switch can be taken out of the module.
  11. Reassembly is the reversal of the above steps. Remember to check all electrical connections, be careful to ensure parts are properly aligned (and no wire pinching) before replacing retaining screws and trim clips. I also changed the stop-start switch and steering wheel paddles at the same time to give a nice fresh look. Stop-start switch can be replaced as part of the above process, steering wheel paddles are retained by a single T20 torx head screw on each side and it’s a 15 minute job at most. Just turn steering wheel to 90 degree position to make access easy.
Hope this helps. Feel free to comment or DM if I can provide further advice. Photos below may help provide a little more orientation.
