Default F Type Temperamental Start

Hi Everyone,

Its my first time posting here - totally out of ideas! Ive been unable to start my F Type recently, depressing the brake pedal and hitting ignition. The only thing that is happening is a twang/click noise like a spring is being released. Had the AA out for it, we had jsut about diagnosed it was the starter when he decided to attach the negative lead on a jump start kit to check the earth, when it fired up into life. Got the car to a garage, said that the technician who visited thought it was a bad earth and could they have a look. Garage said theyd cleaned the connections etc and the car had worked fine, and I managed to use it a couple of times again the day I picked it up. Left it 3 days on the drive and its just failed to start again with the exact same symptoms. Anyone got any ideas? I dont have a jump start kit here at home so cant try to replicate what the AA technician managed, but open to suggestions! Thanks.

Tom

Check this and update the thread if you get to the bottom of it to help others in the same situation.

Had a similar problem with starting and ground connections - which connection did they clean up and re-secure? There are several - mine was attached to the transmission bellhousing.

If you had a dodgy earth it's possible that the battery wasn't being fully charged. In most cases low battery voltage can cause random issues so it's always a good idea to make sure the battery is fully charged before you start diagnosing anything. Do you have access to a decent charger?

Check and tighten the battery leads then give it a full charge session. These tend to come loose with vibration over time.

Is your Jag suffering from insomnia?

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Just exit your car as normal. Close both doors, hood, and trunk. Lock as typical. Then peer through either doors' window to view the lock switch visible on the other door. It should have one yellow LED illuminated. Stare at it for 1-5 mins until it turns off.

If it does not turn off, your Jag has caught the dreaded insomnia.

In case the OP is wondering, this could be the case if the car had been plugged in at a garage for instance using a 3rd party diagnostic system. Most NON-JLR diagnostics are not able to shut down the communication port leaving the system hanging thus draining the battery quite quickly.

Seen this many times. Also some chinese OBD devices like HUD:s, electric dash etc can prevent system going to sleep. Even adapter later removed.
Usually remove main battery do not help since modern vehicles may have non-volative memorys even in CAN-Bus nodes for faster wake up, but SDD function: "Vehicle reset" have been worked like a charm.

How old is the Battery? Sounds like you need a new battery.
