Default F-Type and XKR in the same garage?

Hi all, I've been the owner of an F-Type R for about a year and a half now that serves primarily fun/weekend duties. It's been great so far. I have a Volvo S60 R that I daily drive that's becoming a bit of a chore and I'm looking to replace it. I know the "F-Type vs XKR" type threads have been discussed here before, as well as "XKR daily driver" threads, but has anyone owned BOTH at the same time? Thinking about replacing the Volvo with a relatively low milieage XKR (X150), looking at all years, but mostly interested in '12+ MY which seem to command at least 7-10k more than '07-'09.

I've test driven an '08 XKR and it felt different enough to me to justify owning both, while being comfortable enough for daily driving and road trips. Thoughts?

TIA!

I can’t help you, other than to share these pix from my club last summer. Didn’t know the couple in the XKR, but had a nice chat. I happened to follow them out to the parking lot, and was fun to hear them when they saw my car parked next to theirs.

I changed my 2010 XKR for the F-Type so never owned them both together. I'd say the XKR is a much more "civilised" drive compared to the F-Type, which is a real hooligan when you want it to be. And the XKR has a lot more space - those back seats are excellent storage areas. But if I had both, I'd probably still choose to drive the F-Type daily.

Hi, I'm pretty sure that 3 - 4 years ago one of the XKR guy's missus had a 'vert F Type, and a picture of the cars in the garage was his avatar.

I went from the 5.0 XKR to the F Type. Strangely enough I used to have an S60R as well, getting tired of that turning circle, eh? Beautiful car, especially in a manual, but the turning circle was just awful, I could never park mine and U turns were a fond memory.

OK so what I think is this:

1. the XKR is excellent as a daily driver subject to some drawbacks against the newer cars;
2. the transmission is sloppy and the infotainment is very dated, even in the '12 models, but if you have a '14 - '15 F Type you wont notice the infotainment difference;
3. it is otherwise still a beautiful car. No point comparing it to the F Type because they are so different;
4. I thought it was closer to the XE or the XJR to drive, although obviously oodles more power than the XE;
5. the '12 model looks the best IMO, but doesnt sound all that good. The 4.2 V8 sounds great but the car doesnt look as nice;
6. you can improve the sound in the '12 model by deleting the resonator and putting in an X pipe, but it is still relatively quiet inside the coupe.

If I was thinking of that I would also consider a XFR-S. A lot of car for the money, and the first gen XF is still a beautiful looking car.

rrd,
As a three time Volvo owner in the '80s, three different models all of which didn't stay with my family more than a year. We just didn't learn our lesson thinking we just had bad luck each time. You couldn't give me a Volvo for free, they broke so often. I don't own an F-type, but I have two XKRs, one X100 and a 5.0L 2010 X150. I have used both of my XKRs as daily drivers, the 2010 for the last 6+ years.and nearly 100,000 miles. I had an F-type V8S courtesy of JLR for a week before they were even offered for sale (a promotion with Jaguarforums.com) and thought it was great except for the pitiful trunk space in the convertible and the inability to have the seat back all of the way and still rake the seat back backwards. As others have said, the XKR is just more civilized and less raucous. And with a $700 pulley and tune pumping hp to nearly 600hp, there is no lack of urgency. On the track, it's bigger and heavier but still fun, and as a daily driver, it's just great! With the coupe there is decent storage, and you can fit yours and a buddy's golf bags in without issue. It just goes about its business serenely and with beautiful style. It is not without issues. The water pumps are a known problem (I've had four), the leather dash cover shrinkage is common in warmer climates, but if you solve those, it's very reliable and a joy to own. I actually like what the increased size does to the body proportions. Plus, you can buy them for so little money now, it's just shocking. $25,000 can buy you a 5.0L XKR in good condition, probably the best automotive bargain in history for a car that started life near $110,000.00, is a side view clone of an Aston DB9 while outperforming it. Most important if looking at buying one is the service history, specifically oil change intervals. Good luck in your hunt but don't count on using the back seats for anything other than a parcel shelf. Whatever you decide, you'll forget about the Volvo very quickly.

The XKR wheelbase is five inches longer than an F-Type, but 5 inches narrower, which should tell you all you need to know. The XKR is a true GT with a
classic cockpit, though by today's standards it may seem somewhat tight. Unlike the F-Type, the XK does not share parts with the XE, an entry-level car
with bits that do not belong on a $100K model. Mine, a 2013, is a daily driver, and it demands all the attention any Jag has. Such is the price of driving
the "working man's" Aston, a working man being a Barrister or a PM. The XKR has presence, not sure the F-Type shares that particular trait.

rrd,
To add my .02 worth, I replaced my '79 Corvette(went to son and grandsons in Denver) with a '17 F-type coup. I then decided I needed a 'daily driver' that I could take to the grocery store/local mall. After a couple of false starts(Cad. Allante'), I settled on a '06 XK8(X100) convertible. Picked the X100 as it seems a natural evolution of the XKE, and to me, seems more distinctive than the X150. My wife is a bit nervous driving the F-Type due to power and 'newness'. She drove the XK8 before I bought it so she is reasonably comfortable driving it(still prefers her Cadillac SUV). Originally the plan was to keep the XK as purchased, with a few dents and paint cracks, base coloured interior(taupe /ivory). Of course I have now dyed the taupe, wine burgundy, replaced the outdated NAV system with 3 gauge upgraded instruments, repainted engine compartment components and I am planning a repaint in the new year.
Regardless of the car I am driving, I constantly get positive comments, 'thumbs-up', and questions about the cars. The best is that unlike a Corvette, I do not see a Jag 2-3 times on every block. Regardless of your choice, you can't go wrong with an XK, just remember, it is an older, discontinued car, and will occasionally need some TLC. I have never seen anyone giving a Volvo a thumbs up on the road.

No, they're worthy of a different elevated digit!

Yeah the turning radius is getting really old. I almost bought the '08 XKR I test drove based on the turning circle alone! lol

Thanks for the info! Definitely helpful and reinforces the drive I had.

That’s why they print menus for restaurants.

A lot of it is trying to justify their own choices ....
And the F-Type isn't a Marmite car, lots of people are indifferent to it, I suspect. But Marmite could be a cool colour, especially if it's in one of the colour shifting finishes ....

If everyone liked the same car, we would all be driving Black Fords. Each to their own.

Happy Holidays.

I kinda have the XKR and Ftype in different garages, my brother has the Ftype.

That aside your question really is; should one replace the Volvo with the XKR.

On one hand life is too short to drive a Volvo, for some, but there is practicality and necessity. Such as being able to carry passengers and being able to park in doggy spots.
On the other, there is the luxury of experiencing the contrast between two kinds of sports cars, an one will always make you appreciate the other- so very complimentary and never a compromise, such as getting into a Volvo after an Ftype.

Basically you will feel like you are getting into the better car every time you switch regardless of which car you drive.
And there is economies of scale as well, once you find a good indy for the Fype, you have one for the XKR and the parts and so on.

The thing to keep in mind that isnt talked about is, the XKR was more money and more car, with a lot more options. So when both cars are sitting in the driveway and we have to choose which car to take on a hot day or on a long trip, the cooled seats make it a no-brainers.

Local beets, citrus yogurt, cucumber, hazelnut, vinaigrette, for $11 bucks.
Or
Dandelion salad for $12

Be still my beating heart.

Oi, the s60R was a hell of a car in its day! I had one for a couple of years - the seats would be better than the Jags', the leather better quality, the stereo overwhelmingly better, mine was a manual and the box itself was very sweet with huge pull in second and third and a beautiful close ratio, the brakes - 4 piston Brembos all round. In a straight line you could comfortably and confidently drive that car faster than any Jag I've been in, it was planted on the road like nothing else. But then it had awful oversteer due to too much weight on top and in front of the front axle, and the turning circle from memory was over 13m - put into context it was 5 feet plus bigger than the XKR or the F Type. I have vivid memories of trying to do U Turns and having to reverse into traffic.
