If this is true not only will it help to find the source of any very small leaks, but it will be VERY easy for JLR to tell if we are using oil that meets the spec.
Simple, elegant solutions to things turn me on. That's a great idea. If I used it on my Wrangler it would look like a one hour hotel room under the UV light.

Finally got around to looking up what my dealer used, according to my invoices:
First change (2014): 5W-20 Castrol Syntec
2nd change (2015): 5W-20 Castrol Edge

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Just goes to show how meaningless the specified oil really is.

"Fancy" or not, on my initial service, done two weeks ago, they used Edge Professional - hate to see what Unprofessional would be - 5W20.

2 questions:

1-If I live in a very warm climate (Florida), is 0W20 better than 5W20?
2-How many miles recommended by Jaguar between oil changes?

Interesting. The Jaguar oil addendum someone posted here a few years ago says, for the V6:

SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting spec WSS-M2C925. If unavailable or, where ambient temperatures fall to lower than -20C, SAE 0W-20 engine oil meeting JLR spec STJLR.51.5122 should be used.

[I would assume that's what's in the manual now, but that wasn't in the 2014 manual.]

I would think the -20C (-4F) caveat would apply to you in the Great White North, as you drive your car all winter (though it doesn't get that cold very often.) I ignore it since I store my car for the winter.

in the warmer climes, you want the heavier oil (5W-20).

While it's true that since we live in Brunswick, and work in Portland - near the ocean which keeps the temperatures from getting as low as inland - I can assure you that we, and my F-Type, will have plenty of very cold days Dave. Colder, as the saying goes, than a witches t#%.

I suggest firing up your F-Type and coming up - bring those wingbacks if you'd like - and finding out for yourself. I'll buy the oil [5/20]...and the lobsters.

P.S. That goes for you too Unhinged. Or should I say Joker???? Captain Obvious??? Can't keep track of all your nom de plumes! I'm beginning to think you really are unhinged .

Once per year, or 16,000 miles. (Whichever comes first)

This is by far the longest recommended service interval on any car I have ever owned.

15K mile intervals are becoming pretty commonplace on cars of all types. They were 10K miles a decade ago using non-synthetic oil.

There's no evidence that these intervals are anything but conservative for an average driver..

My 2002 MINI announces computer determined oil intervals based on recorded driving conditions (which conditions, I don't know). Thev've been as short as 13K and as long as 18.5k miles (castrol edge 5w-30 is specified)

My 1999 BMW 328i had that system, and maybe all BMW's since then, or even before???

My last BMW came with a sensor that alerted me when the oil quality was approaching a minimum threshold and let me know it was time to change the oil. The theory is that it only recommended oil changes when necessary. So people who run their engines harder would change their oil more frequently and those who baby their cars would change it less frequently. This seems ideal since you're not just relying on averages to determine when to do the change.

Of course, who knows if it really does what it claims. Either way I thought that was pretty convenient, and based my maintenance visits around when it said the oil needed changing.

As I recall, I ended up doing one oil change about 3 months after I bought the car, and then another oil change roughly every 6-9 months after that. All covered by BMW of course.

I haven't bought a car in 20 years. I drove a Wrangler for that period of time, changing my oil sub 3000 sometimes because of the leaks.

I knew the interval was longer, & I know the dealer said that car would tell me.

But I just hit 5300, and got slightly curious thinking I was driving it too long. I have read this and reread this at least 5 times and I'm still in shock. I definitely know where in the future now.

Wow
