I believe it's a new option for 2016. I saw a small photo in the UK brochure, but that's the only time I've seen it. Didn't really like the way it looked so didn't investigate further. I think the coupe's design doesn't lend itself to these small fixed spoilers (visually). Maybe a crazy wing spoiler for that racy look, but otherwise haven't seen a small spoiler that looks good. Kind of like the AMG GT...don't like that little spoiler in the back.
I have a 16 AWD and yes, the side skirts are larger than they need to be and collect plenty of road crap shooting off the front tires. The dirt and grime is especially bad for mine in Polaris White. Despite that, I still really like them and they set the car apart a bit.
The fixed spoiler detracts from the clean elegant lines of the coupe. I would have paid extra for the retracting spoiler just to eliminate the fixed one.
I'm not really digging the fixed spoiler and I DEFIANTLY can't stand the new side shirts. I understand different strokes for different folks but to me they even look worse in person. I was at a car show a few weeks ago with my 2015 V6 S and another guy had a white 2016 R and everybody talked about how they liked mine more without the side shirts. They weren't saying it to make me feel good either cause most didn't even know it was my car.

I think it depends on what you like about the car. The car looks much more elegant without the side skirts and spoiler. I think that is a given, and if that is what you're attracted to then you'll prefer that. However I think the side skirts and spoiler make the car look more sporty and aggressive, while not sacrificing too much on the elegance side. To me, I don't really like the fixed spoiler on that car, nor do I really like the factory spoiler on the coupe (being so tiny looks wrong.) I think the factory spoiler on the convertible is the right mix... it is elegant when down, and sporty when deployed.

I agree it looks better with no spoiler, but the deployed spoiler looks more like an aircraft speed brake and makes the coupe look less attractive in motion. My point was the fixed spoiler looks better than the deployed retractable.
Fortunately for me and other convertible owners, the retractable spoiler on our cars is thinner, longer, and far more innocuous when deployed.
Also in my view, the car is far more aesthetically pleasing with no side skirts at all--either the '14-15 or even less pleasing curved '16 versions.

Agree with this.
They should have done it like the Panamera S spoiler - retractable and width expanding when open.
