Default Fog Lamps

This may be a silly question, but what does this fog lamp button do? (#45)?

I can't for the life of me see that any lights change, on the front of the car anyway, when that button is selected or not selected. Maybe they are on the rear?

If it's anything like the XF they are on the rear only.
Try putting them on then going around the back of the car to have a looksee.

FYI - Rear fog lights are mandatory in Europe. You'll find the rear fog lights much more visible there:

Than compared to the US:

For US market cars, the rear foglights is integrated with the reverse lights.

Yeah - I was sort of curious what it looks like if you have rear fogs ON, and then put it in reverse....

Rear fog lights are red, I believe.

Yes, but when Fog and Reverse lights are both ON, what does it look like? Or do the fogs go out (so no red) when you engage reverse?

I have a 2016 and when I turn them on, their is a light bar all across the lower part of each tail light the turns on. Bright red. it has nothing to do with the back up light.

The cosmetic differences in Andrew's picture above are, I believe, the V6 vs V8 version rather than regional differences. My V8 rear valance lamps look like picture 2.

On my '16 V6S, the fog switch turns the backup light fixture very bright red. When both the fog and backup lights are on, the red bulb is obviously at the top and the white bulb on the bottom of the fixture.

So, it would seem that the purpose of the fog lamps is to improve own car visibility, not to improve ability to see anything.

That's always been the case with rear fogs. Even my '02 MINI has them. Very reassuring to have them on in the fog or heavy rain, knowing that people won't rear end you since they can see you at far greater distances.

Well I once had a rally car that I mounted front driving lights and rear fogs on. The rear fogs were to see things behind me on desolate country roads, especially when I had to do a turn around. I just calibrated my thinking and will use them to warn drivers behind me, thanks.

Sure, it's better with than without, but clear and sunny is no guarantee that you won't get rear-ended

Unfortunately with cell phones and texting, that is all too true these days.

Turn around and face the congregation, Brother. You're preaching to the choir. Four months and counting.

Are you sure that you are switching on the fog lights? Do you have a V6 or a V8? It would seem weird if rear fog light position was different...

If you weren't on the other side of the country, I'd let you borrow my car for the weekend. I feel for you, friend!

The rear fogs on MINIs are located in several different positions depending on MY and model within a MY. Since the rear valences are different between the V8 and V6, it makes sense that the rear fogs could be located differently.
