Default Have you needed to top off your oil level?

I took my F-type in today for the recent recall fix for the passenger seat. The mechanic (who is also a friend of mine) said that he noticed that when he started the car, it gave off a bit of a rattle noise. He checked the oil and it was about 2.5 quarts low. He filled it to the desired level. I had my first and only oil change back in June of this year. I told him that I have not seen any leaks and he said that it can easily loose that much oil with aggressive driving. Anyone else have this happen?

I occasionally did the vehicle info oil check thing...definitely lost some oil but wasn't enough to need a top off. But then I also got an oil change recently...so maybe if I waited longer I would have needed some oil.

I was surprised at just how much oil I had lost. Going forward, I will get my yearly oil change in April/May and will have the dealer top off the oil in the fall. That should prevent any possible damage.

I never top up any oil until the first oil-change at 8500km.
I added 0.2 l during the period from 8500km to 12000km now.
Most probably they don't filled it to the top during maintenance.
One scale-mark on the oil-level gauge is appr. 0.125 liter so
the difference between MIN and MAX is 1 liter.
If you had to add 2.5 liters didn't you get any warning
"ENGINE OIL CRITICALLY LOW" in the vehicle message center ?
regards
Ulrich

2/3 of a gallon of oil burned off (assuming its not leaking) in 5 months in a relatively new car sounds like a lot to me. I might put that much in my ole Land Cruiser, but it has 240,000 miles on it...

How many miles did you do since June?

Approx 6,000 miles since June. With zero leaking of any oil since the beginning (the garage floor has always been clean) I'm wondering if a tech who did the service in June didn't add the required amount or could it be a case of the engine breaking in with the car driven hard in sport/dynamic mode 98% of the time?

With my cars I have found that if I reasonably follow the prescribed break in procedure, I will use some oil until the rings seat in.. maybe a quart or often less.. usually once a few thousand miles are past, I don't really use more.

My f type r only has around 1600 miles on it and its garaged for the winter and has not really used any noticeable amount of oil so I'm not sure what it will end up using.

On my XKR (same engine) it did use about a quart over the first few thousand miles and then that was about it.

When I used to drag race and drive extremely aggressively, I did use some oil fairly consistently, but this was many years ago... we expected it at least partly due to hard de-cel as the vacuum pulled oil up over the rings, and as we ran the engine up to red line quite often.

Anyway, its easy to check oil on your car and it would be wise to check it every 750 miles or so for awhile to see that it stops, or slows down to an acceptable level.

Also, I always check my oil after its changed to ensure the right amount was added.
Lawrence.
