Default Hello and a configuration question

Good day all!

My wife has been dreaming of an F-type for years and we finally have enough spare cash in the bank to make it happen!

Found a a nice Italian Red roadster, its well equipped for a non S. Thanks to this site, I found Topix.

We can live without the adaptive lighting and blind spot sensors, but I was initially bummed to find no exhaust button. In reading here I discovered the button/no button active options.

I see the car info notes dual exhaust as fitted but not fitted with exhaust tone. Does this mean I have active with no button? I didn’t crawl under the car when we were looking yesterday.

It is a snarly beast in dynamic/sport.

Thanks for any wisdom!!

never heard it referred to in that way; I suspect that this car does not have an active exhaust. This is not a bad thing if you want you want is "loud." It's commonly misunderstood that the "active" in active exhaust on Jaguars is a quieting feature.

I'd advise against a car without blind spot sensors. At least on a vert, the blind spots are tremendous with the top up.

Understood! I intend to never operate it with the top in place.

What year is the car? My MY19 brochure says ‘active sports exhaust’ is standard on the base and V6S. Rear parking aid and rear camera are also listed as standard on all models. Same in MY18 brochure, but these are options on the base in MY17.

Caveat: brochures aren’t always 100% accurate, and I don’t have a MY20 one.

I have no vision/parking aids. Top is almost always down when I drive it. I’m still lousy at angle parking, as I can’t see the lines as I pull in.

Got it! So, in other words- standard exhaust is loud all the time?

That seems to be the consensus. Does appear to be pretty loaded. Has heated seats/steering wheel, which I thought were a bit silly when I got mine. But as they make it more comfortable with the top down in cooler weather, I love them.

Looks like it probably has the climate pack and premium pack, at least. Haven’t figured out what the CCR items are.

What color?

+1. Looks like a non-active exhaust (no by-pass valves) and (like Dave says) almost as loud as the active exhaust with the valves open.

No. An F-type without the active exhaust button sounds like the same F-type with an active exhaust button that is not being used. So it’s always in ”quiet mode”. An F-type with the option will sound higher when the button is pressed compared to one without it.

And the car in question lacks a rear view camera, rear sensors and front sensors and no blind spot system. This will be a very difficult car to have in my mind.

The 2014 model year base V6 is listed in the sales brochure in front of me now as having "Sport Exhaust" fitted as standard equipment (Canadian model, but I assume that the US model will be the same in this regard). The V6S and the V8S of that model year are both listed as having as standard the "Active Sport Exhaust" (which presumably means that the exhaust note differs by automatic activation of the bypass valves). This Active Sport Exhaust is listed as "standard on the F-Type S and the F-Type V8 S and *is also optional on F-Type* (sic). Without specifying a reference to individual models the paragraph ends with *"An optional Switchable Active Exhaust allows manual control of the system, for even greater driver involvement*" (p.9, under "Supercharged Engines").
I hope this is helpful.

Back when I first got my S, I had the opportunity to test out the exhaust note next to a 2014 V6 base with the sport exhaust. I could not discern much more volume from mine with the valves open, but it was certainly a lot quieter with the valves closed.

This is not correct. A car without the switchable active exhaust may still have an active exhaust, in which case your statement would hold.

On the other hand, a car without active exhaust (the old base V6, where active exhaust was an option) also would not have a button in the console, but there is no dampening effect possible, thus it is always in "loud" mode.

Thanks for the gentle nudges. I think we pass and hold out for a car with sensors.

We found a nice white/red car with everything- not sold on white complimenting the f type, but the red interior pairs nicely.

Besides parking sensors (and reversing camera) the one thing you really need if you ever drive with the top up is the reverse traffic detection system (also called cross traffic detection). I've commented before on this but on my coupe it is the one and only driver aid that I have found at all useful and it has saved me a few times from embarrassment or even a small bingle when reversing out from a parking spot. Front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and blind spot monitoring are nice to have but I rarely find them all that useful so I pretty much never use them. However I suspect there is no such animal as an F-Type with just the reverse traffic detection system and none of the other doodads.

If you intend to do long road trips, then always-loud exhaust is going to make that more tiring. I almost always drive my F-type with exhaust open, but even I turn off loud mode after about an hour of droning on the highway speeds.

Agree, sometime you want it quiet and have it act like a GT cruiser. (Other times not!).

Thanks again for all of the help- and now I think I may be cooking with GAS. 2014 Black/Tan V8S.... because 495 HP must be better, right? This one is essentially loaded, including extended leather (important for me) and all the packages. He is asking $41,500 and I would need to ship (1000), but I don't need to pay any sales tax as I live in Nevada and private party sales have no tax (saving 4,000).

I have heard some of the reviews out there that indicate the V6S cars are the "sweet spot" and that the V8 adds some weight and GT feel, but I am not sure if
1) That is a bad thing
2) That is true
