The main reason for this post; to see if this would be of interest to anyone or would it be a complete failed project not worth investing.

We’re contemplating, creating a project to develop a custom digital gauge with a custom pod to mount.

The gauge would have the ability to display 4 values on screen at once, along with provide a selection from +40 different parameters. I don’t believe it would have the ability to datalog and save a file, but it would show/recap the last peak value, as in highest boost on run or maybe even 0-60mph time frame..etc.

The gauge size would be generic size at 2-1/16inch, and the mounting pod would most likely install somewhere clean but also OEM looking, the wiring would be through the OBD plug. The side defrost vent to me, seems like a good fit but please provide your feedback or alternative mounting location option (see picture attached as example for location).

I guess for many here it would depend on exactly which four values are shown.
Even better if there were say eight to choose your preferred four from and you could chop and change to a different four at will.
I would go first and foremost for engine oil level, followed by coolant level, then boost level/vacuum then maybe battery voltage.

 

As mentioned; You would have the available selection from +40 different parameters..aka values to show for selection of max 4 on display at 1 time.

The list of +40 parameters is the ones used in our custom datalogger tool already available for sale. Everything you need to monitor performance would be in those +40 parameters.

 

Thanks for that, I somehow missed the bit about "a selection from +40 different parameters".
But that still leaves the question, would that be a "one time only" selection or could you chop and change at will among the 40+?

 

Yes, you can deselect/select at anytime through the display. You are not “locked” to 4 values, all the parameters are at your disposal.

 

I'm all for it: the more info/feedback I can get, the merrier!

Readability strikes me as an immediate concern. No fun having a gauge if you're squinting to read the thing.
Something like a high-contrast white-on-black LCD could be nice?

 

OBD ….. so flat battery every morning?

 

I doubt it.
I haven't read of any of the dozens of us here (me included) having battery problems after using the VAP hand-held OBD2 plug in tuning device, and I would be confident the blokes at VAP would thoroughly check the new gadget for this problem before releasing it for sale.

 

This would/could be handy. Similar set-up on my 911 Turbo. Replaced the totally useless Sport Chrono lap timer with PLX OBDII gauge that worked just as you described. Some used Aeroforce. Both fit perfectly in the Chrono Pod and could read most anything you could get from the OBDII port.

A key will be the form factor and mounting approach so it is not a tacky gauge hanging off of something, and looking out of place.

I wish this to be somewhat more integrated to the dash to more OEM-look manner, to look factory fitted on a first glance.

Agree with the OEM look crowd. I want to see oil temp, tranny temp, and differential temp.

 

My battery control module flips out every time I use the VAP tool. I would be very interested in having additional data available during the drive and would buy one, but would be wary regarding the bat management issue.

 

I need to get something like this on my X150. I've been thinking about the ashtray-mount setup, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Would this be compatible with other Jaguar models, or just for the X152?

 

If it works anything like the others I have used in Porsches and BMW's, it reads from the OBDII Port...So in US, all cars Post 1996 should work with these devices. Not sure on how the mounting will be or form factor, but the tech will work the same.

I’d love a gauge. I always wondered why ftype folks don’t utilize aftermarket boost guages. While not necessary, they are pretty cool and I enjoy seeing how much boost im hitting at any given moment. Multiple inputs to switch from are even better. If it’s obd,can you solve for the battery drain issue? Also, would be ideal if the guage pod or mounting location fit & finish flows with the interior of the car, and that the colors match the dash (like when in dynamic mode).
