I did not spec my car, and would not have bothered with it (or the power tailgate), but my came with it (and the power tailgate).

Have driven nearly 1k miles in it and haven't even looked at the apps.

I use a Belkin charger for the phone (two ports, so that passenger can charge too), and do everything over bluetooth.

Agreed, it would be nice if Google Maps integrated (I think the new Audis have this), but otherwise the Bluetooth method is all I care about.

Yeah I notice they dropped the price of the incontrol apps option to 450 but I wouldn't bother with it if and when I spec it out.

Default No new Apps approved since InControl launched

Looking at the PDF, on page 1 of this thread, the controlling Q&A:

Q: Can I use other apps or play games on the vehicle’s Touch-screen?
A: No, only approved road-worthy apps work through InControl™ Apps.

This decision appears to be liability based. Presumably some legal types at JLR have decided not to approve any applications which they don't deem as "road-worthy".

Their thinking is that if you are playing Candy Crush on your iPhone while driving and cause an accident, then the injured parties can't/won't sue JLR; however, if Candy Crush is available on InControl™ Apps and you cause that same accident while playing Candy Crush on the vehicle's touchscreen, then the injured parties WILL sue JLR.

The unfortunate result of such thinking is that JLR has approved a total of zero applications for InControl™ since the F-Type launched, which is completely idiotic and demonstrative of the extremely poor IT integration in an otherwise superb vehicle.

The PDF shows what the InControl™ app on the iPhone looks like when launched, including a top section for "NEW" apps. Since I've installed InControl™ on my iPhone I can report that there is no NEW apps section, presumably because there are no new apps.

Putting on my white hat, I have to think it would be not so hard to write an Android and/or (jailbroken) iPhone application to interface with the vehicle's InControl™ system that would simply replicate the smartphone's screen.

Anybody want to help out with such a project?

I have it on my F Type R and have found it to be almost as useful as teats on a boar hog.

InControl will be standard on MY2016, so whatever happens in the future will be available at no cost. Hopefully they will look at this technology a little more now that is more pervasive.
