In my experience so far with a lot of Japanese and American cars of my own and in my family, my two Jaguars have been about average in reliability, maybe even a little higher than average as I started driving and working on cars back in the early 1980s, a particularly bad era for automotive quality. The only thing about these Jaguars is that both my XJ8 and XF seem to have some design flaws that required preventative maintenance that I never would have learned about if I hadn't been reading this forum. The 4.0L like in my XJ8 had plastic timing chain tensioners that would break and the 5.0L like in my XF have issues with the water pumps leaking and again timing chain guides that wear more quickly than they should. All of these, JLR came out with new and improved parts in later year models but never offered to upgrade cars for earlier customers unless they failed under warranty. But then again, I had a Toyota Landcruiser that had run of transmissions between certain serial numbers that they left a check ball out of the valve body. Toyota would only fix the transmissions if they failed under warranty. Mine made it past the warranty before I learned about it on a Landcruiser forum and so I had to order the check ball and do that preventative maintenance myself, just like I've done with both Jaguars. So if you are buying one new, you just plan on not keeping it past the warranty and accept that its going to depreciate rapidly. If you are buying used out of warranty, just do your research and account for the cost of these upgrades or the risk of not doing the upgrades when you make your offer. But as far as all the typical stuff that goes wrong with cars in general, alternators, window motors, brake calipers, etc., Jaguars seem to be as reliable as any other brand.

 

Only because nobody in America wants to admit they hit the wrong pedal. There have been several cases in the last few years of vehicles going through store fronts here in Vegas. Not one of them was and Audi IIRC.

 

I had the Ford water pump die spectacularly on I-40 and trash the motor on a 2012 XJ with under 42k miles. That left a bad taste if I'm honest. Now I'm looking at all those off-lease F-Types that are flooding the market. Like a moth to the flame.
