Default Klunk noise in rear

So I finally got the chance to replace my stock 19" propellors for 20" black cyclones and change over from pzeros to pilot super sports. I have no idea if the noise I am hearing is from hibernation, from the new wheels/tires, or was always there and I just never noticed it. I did check the torque on the wheels after installation and they are certainly not loose

Sound:
It sounds like there is a baseball/softball rolling around in the trunk and hitting against the interior trunk walls. There is NOT a baseball or anything else rolling around in the trunk. Or maybe it kinda sounds like the rear brake pads shifting inside the caliper

Feel:
I am not really able to feel it, more of a sound and a slight vibration.

When:
At very low speeds when slowing down at a stop sign or traffic light I will hear the klunk. I was turning into a parking spot this morning and the sound occurred several times in a row. Sometimes the noise happens upon starting from a stop, but mostly when slowing down.

Questions:
Anyone have this type of noise before?
Could there be anything that I needed to change when changing the wheels/tires?
Any chance the wheels would be hitting against the calipers or anything?
Any ideas what it might be?

Thanks in advance

the '14s had a known problem with the rear suspension bushing which caused a clunk sound. It was a defect and still may be covered as a result. Operative word is "may".

Thanks, I'm actually CPO until close to 2021, I assume it would be covered if it was that. When would that issue that you reference occur, under similar circumstances as I describe?

I guess I've got a little research to do on that issue.

thanks for the link, hadn't had a chance you research yet, but looks like a trip to the dealer is in the near future.

took my 14s to JLR today and they are going the service bulletin route and ordered up the parts for me and will have to return for service when parts arrive. Fingers crossed that its not the rear diff or something else invasive.

been a while since posting, but the klunk noise is still there and they heard it and said they 'tightened up some stuff in the trunk that may be causing the noise'. Interesting since there wasn't anything in the trunk bouncing around. When I picked it up, I made them sit in it with me as I slowly pulled out of the parking spot the klunk was clear as day. He said 'yea, I heard that too but wasn't sure what it was, might need a new rear'. Isn't their job to figure out what it is rather than ignore the noise. He told me to 'drive it more and it may go away'.

Pretty frustrating but the next closest dealer is over an hour away...UGH.

To summarize, its a thump noise that I can hear very clearly at slow speeds when starting or stopping. When driving at higher speeds it is not as noticeable, but that may just be due to additional road noise or other background noises.

I was told I will need to record the noise and they will have to fight with JLRUSA to get a new rear (if that is what it is). I'm not sure I want to go that route or not in case thats not the issue. Another year on the CPO and it has only 18k miles.

I'd escalate to the service mgr or GM? May go away is a bad answer.

I’m no expert but it sounds just like what I had...a bad or defective differential. Mine got changed under warranty.

Not sure if you're using spacers, but the set screw needs to be removed. It can cause a spacer installation which is not flush, and can cause a thunk in the rear-end. This happened to me with a Maserati I once owned. Just something to check out (if you're running with spacers)

It certainly sounds like excessive lash in the differential. Easy to fix with proper shimming of the pinion gears, but these days they just want to replace the whole unit rather than fix the problem.

It’s interesting because I have a MY18 vert with less than 2K miles on it and I occasionally hear that kluncking sound too from the rear, as if the trunk isn’t properly latched. Strange, and usually at low speeds. I have 20” wheels too.

**UPDATE**

I decided to take the car back a few weeks after my prior post when the dealer told me to 'record it' and 'see if it got worse by the end of the CPO'. Frankly, I didn't want to wait and have it get worse or get denied or have issues with any repairs after the CPO ran out. Better to start these battles a year before CPO expires than a month before.

They ended up diagnosing it as 'too much play in the rear differential' and about a $3000 part to replace. I told them to obviously go ahead and replace it and voila, the noise is 99.5% gone. I would say its 100% gone, but I feel like I occasionally hear a very faint/minor thump at low speeds but I cannot be certain it is the same noise/cause. However, I do know that it is 100x better than it was and I feel more confident that the issue is no longer an issue.

So end of day, anyone that said it may be the rear differential was spot on.

Hi,I had the same problem. Most distinctive when driven around a multi story car park. Going slow, turning corners and going downhill. It happened at other times as well. It really spoilt the car. I read the forums. So I paid the main dealer £350 to have the suspension modification done. It was no better. They suggested changing the diff oil at a cost of £125. The car has a limited slip diff and it seems bad oil can make it stick. The bumping is the sudden release of the clutches. I changed the oil and within 10 miles the car was perfect. A different and better car. I changed it again at 500 miles just to make sure I got all the dirt out.
