Default Locking Wheel Nut Torque

When pulling the wheels off my car today, I noticed all the locking nuts had been tightened down at a significantly lower torque than the others which were at the specified 92 ft-lbs.

Does anyone know what the locking nuts should be torqued to? I presume the key pattern can't handle the full torque.

I went ahead and torqued to 92 ft-lb. I suspect that the last shop that had them, didn't want to hit the key with a calibrated air impact wrench.

I torqued them to 92. No problem. My key fits around the lock so no chance of slipping and stripping the lock. MacGuard keys fit into the lock and can easily be damaged by excessive force. As far as I can determine, only JLR makes a lock that fits our wheels.

+1. The JLT key does indeed offer a solid connection with the nut.

I too noticed that the locks were nowhere near the specified torque. I don't trust "calibrated impact wrenches" in any case. I always tighten the lugs with a proper torque wrench.

Default MacGuard.......

........can be torqued to 92 ft-lb with no problem using an adjustable/calibrated torque wrench with a bit of due care: keep the wrench properly aligned with the wheel and maintain some inward pressure on wrench to keep the key fully engaged.

No impact wrench ever touches any of my cars. I even take my own calibrated one to the tire shop with me.

My Lotus once had several lug bolts seized because some gorilla had massively over-torqued them at one point in it's life. They had to be drilled out.
