I'm looking to buy a 2020 F-Type R....but am really concerned about the reliability of these things...can anyone tell me about their experiences with their F-type, engine issues ,electrical issues, rattles?

I don't have an F-type but I do have an XKR with the same engine as the R. I passed 182,000 miles on my XKR last weekend, and itt has been a most reliable daily driver for the past 8 years. Don't be afraid, just make sure you change oil regularly, check oil level religiously along with coolant level, and you'll be just fine. Life is too short to have a boring car.

 

I'm on my 3rd F-type. I had a 2016 V6, 2018 V6, and now a 2019 V8 -- other than the issues that Jaguar had with the manual transmission clutch in the 2016 MY, I've not had anything significant in terms of reliability issues. The good news is that if you're buying a 2020, you'll have warranty left on the vehicle so you can get to know it and find out for yourself how it operates and if there are any service concerns that arise from your particular car. I have to admit that when I meet strangers and end up chatting about the F-type, so many people seem to remember the old days of Jaguar and their history of electrical issues. I haven't experienced that at all throughout my various F-type ownerships -- so far I'm batting 3 for 3.

 

Reliability concerns are a waste of worry - far more real things to worry about these days. IME Jaguars are no less reliable than other manufacturers, even the allegedly perfect German ones.

 

Did either of you have any major issues with rattles? Also, this 2020 is still new on the lot - what kind of deal should I be expecting?

 

It is as reliable as most cars. Better you should think about it’s quirkiness

 

Just think of the F-type as a high maintenance girlfriend you may have once had. After that it's all good. Mine has had two injectors go out, under warranty at different times, which is an unpleasant driving event. If it wasn't under warranty, I would have replaced all of them at the same time. Now I have one more unpleasant driving event to look forward to before I replace the rest or all 6 out of warranty. Other than that, it's been little manageable things.

 

My F-Type has been more reliable that my wife's former Lexus. Enough so, she bought a F-Pace. Both have the same engine that has a long (and good) history shared across many models. The only downside is depreciation, and that's pretty common on high-end cars. You'll be putting a dent in that by buying "old stock." I got mine about about the same timing and paid just under 26% below MSRP. Good luck. Great car!

 

As for price, check Truecar.com, you can see what others paid. Look that year up on any of the others, Carvana, Carmax, etc to see what prices are and see how each site ranks the deal. Be sure to run a CarFax to find out what the history of the car is. Is this one a demo? off a lease?

The clutch issue was a biggie, I bought my 2017 this past fall and the 4thG clutch had been put in by the selling dealer. You shouldn't have to worry about that with a 2020, and a big deal that you have a considerable amount of warranty left. I had issues with the battery, which was replaced by local dealer under warranty. Also there may be alignment issues with the body panels. On my car, the pass. side panel with the headlight in it stuck out. After reading up on these body issues I noted one post that talked about two screws being loose. When I looked into that, it turned out that those two screws weren't ever installed! Bought them from dealer (cheap) and put them in. Fender aligned much better. There are also many comments on the Meridian sound system. I'm not the audiophile many of them are, but even to me, the sound quality leaves much to be desired... even my 2013 Golf is better! There are many suggestions with sound system upgrades, speaker upgrades, etc. on the forum, an excellent source of help with many experienced and knowledgeable contributors on any conceivable F-type topic.

Do a test drive and put it through its paces... fast acceleration, panic stop(s) [warn salesperson first! :-) ] I turned the Active Exhaust off before doing my test drive, I wanted to hear all the engine/trans noises, and especially any sounds that seemed suspicious or worrisome.

All in all, it is an exceptional vehicle... a lot of difference between it and my 69 E, but that's what a 50-year difference in car production will do! Keep us posted on how the potential purchase works out!

 

LIfesanethesia, you can get a a $10K JLR incetive ona 2021 R before 6/30.
If you still decide on the 2020, you should take the $10K into account in addition to whatever Kelly etc indicate.
You might be better off buying the 2021 with full warranty etc.

I have the opportunity to own 5 variants of the 5.0 Supercharged engine, a 2015 XFR, 2016 RR Sport Supercharged, a 2020 F Type SVR, a 2021 RR Sport SVR, and a 2019 SV Project 8.

I have NEVER had a single issue with any of these vehicles from a mechanical standpoint other than split fuel lines in the 2016 RR Sport due to squirrels chewing the lines (it did happen, I live in the country). The engines are ROCK solid, assuming you keep up with regular maintenance. As a matter of principle, I change my oil and every 7000km which I have always believed is a key element to maintain good engine health. No issues with transmissions (all ZF 8 speed).

As for Rattles the only issue I've had was with the XFR - the rattles were restricted to the from passenger speaker and door panel.

The infotainment system are sometimes finicky, but no worse than any other system from BMW, Audi, VW etc..

I am on my third F type (2015 S V8, 2018 R, and 2021 R) with no problems. My first car had a clunking sound that turned out to be a bolt not fastened somewhere - easy fix. No mechanical issues or rattles and I have loved all of my cars.

 

"These things" just does not cut it for me... Not worthy of an answer right now until I calm down.

 

I think you may have rea way more into 'these things' than you should have.

I’ve have a 2016 F-Type R AWD. I love this beast. The only issue I had was the center screen resetting constantly when blue tooth was hooked up. A software update fixed it. The Pirelli P-Zeros that came with it were horrible. They made the car very twitchy over 100 mph. They also only lasted 12k miles. I switched them to Bridgestone S-04 Potenzas and it’s so much better.

 

Well the image of Nancy Wilson is definitely NOT a nightmare! She can sing These Dreams to me anytime.

 

Hi all - new to the forum, I recently decided after much deliberation on the F-type R AWD 2016 onwards. Given the current market it would be good to have guidance on purchase for the year and mileage - 55-60k is my budget however, will travel to pick up a bargain if needed. Any intel on known/common problems with mileage guidance to factor in with the purchase would be great. Thanks!

 

I am on my 2nd f type, 3rd jag. Selling my 2016 R as I bought an '18 SVR. Based on my research into selling mine, you may be able to get a '17 at the upper end of your budget. Mine will be posted in the budget range you indicate. My 2016 had a differential leak that was repaired. Had 02 sensors replaced a while back (under warranty). Has a corroded grounding screw in the front early on that was replaced under warranty. Mine has 31k. Not much else has needed attention.
