Default Maintaining maintenance plan warranty - annual service

A heads-up - have had my F-Type now just over a year and still so pleased with such a great vehicle.

I'm a little vague with dates and very lucky to have a switched-on wife - I'm well under the mileage requirement but as I said, around a year has past since ownership. Phoned the dealer to arrange the annual service and the first available date was 3 May, which I thought was no big deal.

The dealer just called back to say they'd managed to get me in on 29 April as if you let that 12 month requirement lapse by more than a month your maintenace plan warranty will expire.

Be careful out there!

I changed my first oil at 1000km and plan to do it twice a year or every 10,000km. Oil is cheap, engine problems are not.

Even if I don't end up keeping my F-type long-term, I want her to have a good relationship with the next driver.

The GM at my dealer told me the same thing, which more than likely means dealers have received that message from JLR. I can't imagine they'd be that strict, but I wouldn't want to test it.

Service manager told me an anecdote during our initial meeting. Someone purchased F-type, drove it for 2 years without a single oil change, something went wrong with an oil minder, so it never nagged to change oil. Eventually engine ceased. JLR ended up doing goodwill engine swap.

Now, I wouldn't count on this if you drive your engine into the ground by never changing oil.

Also, keep in mind that first oil change is the most important one. Not only factory fill sat through shipping, dealerships lots, and tons of short drives, but it also has all the initial metal particulates, storage lubricant residues, and set-in shavings. Now, this isn't 60s and Jag does modern factory wear-in and honing, but it isn't perfect.

Again, oil change is cheap and engine problems are not. Why wait to the very last minute?

2yrs...Yes, I can understand JLR declining coverage...1-2 month over, seriously?

If I recall, my first oil change was free, and same thing - 12 months, +/- 1 month. The oil nag should nag you at around 1 year, if you don't reach the miles first. Mine did.

Yep, I agree that oil changes are cheap insurance, but I don't believe for a moment that JLR would cancel your warranty for a car that's under-mileage but over the 1 year calendar date for service.

.....in fact time based service intervals are just another recently popular tool to rid people of cash for the most part but that's another subject.

I believe the point is that you only get your free scheduled maintenance if you bring it in at 1 year +/- 1 month. Otherwise, you have to pay for the service.

Worth clarifying with the GM/service manager whether it's just the one free service you lose, or all future ones too.

Only applies to those that get free maintenance, of course.

When I took auto mechanics in high school back in the 1700's my teacher told us that time does play a part because engines that are not driven much can accumulate moisture which turns to acids over time. No idea if that is true or if it is does it still hold true for today's modern closed crankcase systems.

There is some truth to that......but it's a bit like the "nitrogen in the tires" issue IMO.....true to a point but mostly irrelevant...and overstated. With the advent of computers in cars that can keep track of time and give you a "service required" warning, manufacturers have provided dealers with a nice little cash cow that they wouldn't have if it was mileage only like it was in the past.

Jaguar recommends oil changes every 16,000 miles (25,000 kms) I doubt I'll put more than 5,000 kms on my F type in a year and certainly less than 10,000 kms.......and I can guarantee that my oil analysis after 13 months is going to be much better than a car driven 24,999 kms in 11 months and 29 days...
