More photos of the facelift
This has been the whole process. The 2015 FT being the 240Z. They must 'change' the look over time or people can't beat their cheat that they have the latest model. Unfortunately, and imo, the looks are degrading over time. That is how it works 90% of the time with car models.
I agree...this is part of the cycle....best design was the original...then downhill.
Jag design hit its pinnacle with the XJ and the F-Type (CX-16)...slow decline ever since ....
XJ....F-Type
XF (2009)
XK (2006) F-Pace
I-Pace
XF. (2016)
XE

There have been some against that trend though. The 2012 XK was nicer than the previous ones (lights sorted), the 2011 XF was nicer than the previous one (lights sorted), the 2020 XE is nicer than the current (lights sorted). I think this F Type is going to look wicked. I hope they lose the horizontal bar on the vent, though. I wonder whether the engine in the mule is the current, or the new...sounds like the current one.
There is a render here that looks interesting https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/jaguar/f-type/

Hard to say whether this update will work well, but the rendering is promising
(Thanks BruceTheQuail)
Of course, in a mule you don't actually know what they're testing - could be any part of the car. I heard a tale a few decades ago that Porsche was testing a new drivetrain in a bodyshell from an Opel Rekord, and many autobahn drivers were bemused to be overtaken at speed by such a vehicle!
Agreed, I would have thought the track testing must imply performance changes or tweaks engine/suspension etc as I don’t think the would take to the track just for a new light layout - wind tunnel could do that.

Often the original of a good design is the most beautiful. While updates make things look newer, they don't often make them look better.
I'm not sure that the combination of flowing lines and sharp angles really works for me, I would prefer everything on the f type to be swoopy and rounded. That said, I suppose it has to evolve somewhere.
Here you go, I have put your comment in a more contemporary setting
